Recomendation for a 00 short scale 14 fret guitar
Hi all,
Looking for recommendations on a 00 guitar at about the price point of the new G-00 Gibson (which I am considering; I need to play a few more). Must have is short scale so under 24.9 though my preference is 24.75. I like a wider nut, though the Gibson width was fine 1 3/4 is better. I actually prefer no electronics as I have some decent sound hole pups I can use when needed. I'm very happy to and prefer to buy used to let some else eat the 25-50% price hit ;-) as I do tend to cycle through guitars. And finally, I do not want any made in China guitars. I'm OK with guitars made most anywhere else though prefer guitars made in North America and Japan. I'm located in Hamilton Ontario. Thanks, Jeff Last edited by egordon99; 02-07-2023 at 08:32 AM. I had one made by Ed Bond at Halcyon Guitars that was beautiful, had a great sound, totally unique back when they were around 1 grand but theyve gone up. If you find a used one snag it!

The G-00 does seem to be a lot of guitar for the money - all solid, made in the US. If you find one you like, by all means grab it.
BUT, if you can, save up a bit and get yourself a used Martin 00-18 or 00-28. For most people (not necessarily present company, of course!), either of these would be a potential lifetime guitar. 24.9" scale, 1 3/4" nut, outstanding guitars. For me, my 00-28 put a complete stop to my acoustic GAS. I've bought numerous instruments - electric guitars, mandolins, even a banjo () since I picked mine up, but I haven't been seriously tempted by another acoustic since received mine several years ago, and I play it every day. Yes, you're looking at $1800+, used, but well worth it. Buy once, cry once. Might be the one that breaks your cycle, but if not, you can be sure it will retain it's value. You might also keep an eye out for an Eastman E20-OOSS 14 Fret. They most commonly come with a 1-11/16" nut, but you can find ones with 1-3/4". 24.75" scale. New they are around $1,600. A used one would get you closer to your budget goal.
Oh wait...forgot about the not MIC requirement. Another thought - have you considered a Taylor 322? Technically not a 00, with a 15" lower bout, but my 522 doesn't feel bigger to me than my 00s. You might try one out. I've seen them for $1,110 to $1,300 used. Last edited by KevinH; 02-07-2023 at 12:35 PM. |

You can check brickhouse guitars in Kitchener, ON, CAN
https://brickhouseguitars.com/ For selections @ your price range and their featured brands are good . . . and local for you. Plus, there is Yamaha and Alvarez MIJ at Gibson USA prices (I think CAN D it would be more than in US)

I dont see it as a political statement. That may be what he means because China survives on the USA but it could mean he doesnt like the quality of Chinese guitars. I feel the same, I would be interested in a Japanese guitar cause they have a reputation for quality. I think he needs to state his parameters otherwise hell get all kinds of irrelevant suggestions. The guitar I just bought is Canadian made but I bought it from a US store that had it listed on Reverb. In fact almost all of my acoustics were made in Canada, It was unintentional but they arent made in the USA. Well I had an Epiphone many yrs ago but I dont know where it was made. Before that I had a Japanese classical, I think it was an H5 or something upper echelon. so Im not a "buy USA" guy but I think we can get too sensitive about things people say. Ive been warned about evaluating a guitar. Seems odd to me on a guitar forum.

In no way does China survive on its US trade. They trade with the entire world. There GDP is about $15 trillion and we import about $550 billion. The Chinese produce something like 8 million guitars a year for domestic consumption and export…. The American market is a very small part of that.

Not a lot of 00s that fit your (OP) criteria, new.
Here's one https://www.martinguitar.com/guitars...series-guitars Let the nay sayers who hate on X guitars chime in.

Eh? I didn't think the original poster put a limit on budget. Maybe he did. No Huss and Dalton are definitely in the higher end category. Shame he has ruled out Chinese made instrument- entirely unnecessary in my view and he will be missing out on some mighty fine Eastman guitars that are worth a look around that price.

I have always heard that Martin has never catalogued a 28 style, 14 fret, 00. I would guess the custom shop would be the only original source?
