Cincinnati, Winter Humidity
I live in Cincinnati and have a gas, forced-air furnace with whole house humidifier. I keep the temp at 67 during the day and 64 at nite. Upstairs (ranch, where my acoustic stays), the relative humidity is around 43%. According to what I’ve read, at 20 deg (F) this is about what it should be.
In my unfinished basement where my electrics are, my generic hygrometer/thermometer shows about the same. This is considered “dry”, but if I were to increase humidity, then I would start seeing condensation on windows, etc. In the summer, my AC (dehumidifier) keeps it at 50% or slighty below. I have a portable de-humidifier that I do need to run in the basement to keep it at 50 or slightly below. Any thoughts on this? One more question… while my parents are snow-birds in the winter, my dad asks me to keep his acoustics. As much as I’m tempted to play them, I don’t. However, I do keep them in their cases but in an extra bedroom that I don’t use and have the register closed. The room does get a bit colder. Will this be a problem, or should i get them outta there? Sorry for the long rant, and appreciate any insight! |

I believe 43% humidity is good; that's about what I have in winter and I don't give my acoustics any extra humidification. They seem to be fine.

I wouldn't worry about 43% RH

In the winter with the same circumstances, ours is in that neighborhood...
43-45 % which I'm pretty sure is a good spot from all I have read.

I don't know what an "upstairs ranch" is so I don't understand.
The outside temp of 20F may hod a ~43% RH, but once you heat that same air up to 67F, the humidity will be very low, closer to 20% RH.

The ONLY thing that matters is the indoor RH where your guitars live. Outdoor RH is irrelevant - unless your guitars live outdoors. In that case you have other issues. If you are talking about indoor values of 40-50% that your hygrometer has measured, then no worries at all at either number. That is a perfect range.

I'm up in Dayton, same situation. The frozen/condensation at the bottom of the windows is pretty normal when it's as cold as it's been. Our windows are double pane and argon gas filled and they still show condensation at the bottoms. As long as your humidity is over 40% inside your golden. The condensation will go away if it ever warms up again!

Columbus, I have a room humidifier I bought from Meijr. I'm about 42%. You are good to go!

43% inside the house is pretty much ideal - even a tad high for some. You have nothing to worry about. Play those guitars.

If you do not humidify your house, then your hygrometer is broken and misleading you

I live a little south of Cleveland, and have my guitar room upstairs. I too have a whole house humidifier, but can't get the humidity quite high enough with it alone (without creating condensation), so I also use a room humidifier, which together keep the humidity between 44-48%. If you can manintain humidity above 40%, I wouldn't worry one bit about it...

If you check out different areas in your home and are really obtaining humidity in the 40's, please advise to the brand and model of Humidifier you have attached to your furnace. Mine is made by Aprilaire ad I had it installed 2 years ago but I still need my Essick (same as home depot or sears brands) whole house humidifier to get the humidity into the 40's.
