I spoke with Kim soon after I played a friend's Mahogany / Adirondack deep OM. The OM 28 I wanted would have taken 5 years with a starting price of 11K. That was about 8 years ago.

I let it go.

Wow, guess hind site is 20/20. Since his used OM-28's are selling between $25,000 - $27,000 these days (depending on appointments and condition), it seems like you passed up an opportunity that could have easily doubled your investment... unlike the stock market which would have halved it during that time.

Ha. That's funny-

I have never played one but drooled over the photos online for years. The whole vibe is absolutely right on for me. In my head I have an idea of what they sound like and hopefully one day I'll get to see if I'm right.

While I can't see waiting that long for a guitar these days, I do really like Walker's guitars.

Not wanting to continue taking the thread off track, but since others have mentioned some other "vintage style" builders. I would suggest checking out David Flammang's guitars. They are very reasonably priced for what you get. I have a L-00 that is a wonderful "Gibson style" 00.

I have not owned a Franklin, but from what I have seen and played. I would consider his OM style guitars to be a nice option.

David Eichelbaum has been known for his more modern style guitars, but in the last few years he has been building very vintage inspired instruments. Here is one that he built for Shoenberg Guitars that I drool over on occasion.

I own one of the first OM guitars he built a while back and it is second to none in fit and finish, and I dare say sound and playability.

While you might find fault in some of these makers being totally vintage in their style of build, if that's of major importance. I think these guys deserve a look if you want a fine instrument.

Yes, what happened to him? A few years ago he was all over the WWW and then vanished. I rarely see his name come up these days. Too busy building guitars or ex "flavor-of-the-month"?

Just curious, that's all.

Cheers,
Steve

I don't think David's guitars were ever "flavor-of-the-month". He has continued to make guitars, but like lots of builders things slowed down with the economy the last few years. I know he does an excellent job with restorations on vintage Martin and has done some of that along with new builds. I'm sure that has been beneficial in his knowledge of what it takes to make a nice vintage style guitar.

It makes me smile, too, Michael. My incredible "scrap" Kim Walker guitar. I bet that I'd smile even more if I could hear you play it.

Well, by the time the Walker would have been available, it would have bben far more that the 11K Kim quoted. He told me that he adjusted his prices accordingly. It didn't make sense at the time.

I love his guitars, but I will have to be happy with the Merill OM28, the Brondel A-2, and the 30 year old Santa Cruz Dread.

I've had the pleasure of playing that guitar, as well as John's other Walkers, and I really dig that little black freaky L-00. Definitely hard NOT to smile when playing it.

Resale value is important -- but let's be realistic here, I, like a lot of owners, wouldn't sell the guitar unless I'm about to die, in which case nothing would really matter anyway.

I'm just hoping 7-8 years will (somehow) magically turn into 4-5...
