Nobody responded huh.
Ok I will.
I used that pickup borrowed from a friend. I thought it sounded very good, I’m just not into soundhole pickups, but if you like it, great.

I have a bias against magnetic soundhole pickups that I really need to get over. My opinion was formed by experience with the Dean Markley one that was all high E and B, little of everything else. I need to try playing with a good acoustic mag.

If it sounds good, it is good. I'm always happy when a fellow guitarist finds a solution that makes them smile.

I recently started using a Black Angel, and my fix for the B and E string imbalance was resolved following Noledog’s advice on setting up a mag. I took out the b pole, then brought everything up until the volume was equal that string. Before that I kept failing to bring the b down, even after removing the b, e, and g poles, not realizing I was looking at it backwards. I’m much more happy with the tone now vs. the piezo I was using previously.

In response to the OP, that is sweet. I thought about giving the woody a shot, and may still pick one up at some point. People seem to really like them and you can’t beat the price.

I think they sound great through a preamp. If they did a version you could permanently mount with an endpin I’d have one. I just don’t like having the cable out the soundhole.
I’m pretty sure they could get that pickup into a smaller casing and rebrand it and probably sell a lot of them.

The reason string balance is so hard to achieve on a soundhole pickup is that the bronze winding on an acoustic guitar is non-magnetic. The magnetic pickup is only picking up the steel cores. With a typical wound G string, the core is exceptionally thin as compared to the unwound third string on an electric.

LR Baggs compensates for this by including pole pieces of various lengths, and allowing you to remove the pole pieces entirely.

On the Schertler AG6, there is actually a separate magnetic pickup under each string. Then there are seven separate class A preamps: one for each string, plus a seventh for the mic. There are no pole pieces to adjust, but the string to string balance is better than what I was ever able to achieve adjusting, removing, and swapping out pole pieces on my M80.

Hi,

I use the Duncan woody XL and like it a lot.
It has adjustable pole pieces which helps to get a good string to string balance
much more than a normal eq.
And to my ears it sounds a lot better than piezopickups - a little jazzy too.
