Sweden's Kriatian Matsson, who goes by the stage name The Tallest Man on Earth, despite being 5-foot-7.

I don't think he plays a single song in standard tuning.

Just to mention Diz Disley who I always admired.
And what about John Jorgenson who rarely gets a mention here. An amazing player in many styles but I particularly love his Gypsy Jazz.

Jesse Fuller, one man band bluesman who wrote the much covered San Francisco Bay Blues - almost everyone from Bob Dylan to Paul McCartney has sung it.

My favourite song of his only has 1600 views in YouTube. I recommend the album Move on Down The Line, he had some pretty unique guitar techniques and a lot of wit and charm.

Stephen Wake comes to mind. He is a classical trained guitarists from Scotland, who now resides in Costa Rica. He plays a lot of traditional Celtic music he arranges for fingerstyle guitar. Clean, precise, soulful. He is definitely worth checking out. He has a great YouTube channel.

Sadly taken from us about 20 years ago. He was a fantastic guitarist, singer and songwriter. He had it all: speed, finesse and taste. I only ever saw him play acoustic guitar but I imagine he was great on electric too.
I think he first became known as Al Stewart's guitarist in the early 70s. He was also Elkie Brooks' musical director at one point.

I first saw him in the mid-80s supporting Roy Harper. Must have attended 20 or so of his shows and had the pleasure of supporting him at a few of these too. He was a big inspiration and should have been better known as an artist.

Slim, Isaac was the man who influenced my predilection for 12 fret guitars.
i was opening for him somewhere down in Sussex and he lent me "Junior" his D35-S which started my search for guitars with wider fretboards.

Last time I saw him (Brighton?) was not too long before he died and he was shivering and sweating heavily, but still friendly and gave a great show.

Men liked him, and as my wife remarked - everywhere he goes women make "that" smile". bless him.

For me, that guitarist is Red Shea, the lead guitarist for Gordon Lightfoot for many years. He is dead now, but his type of acoustic and electric guitar playing is one of my favorites. He had a great touch and knew how to create a tasteful but not overstated lead.

Terry Clements was also quite good for similar reasons. He took over as lead guitar player for Lightfoot after Shea died. Clements has also passed on.

Easy one for me to answer. Matt Thomas is my personal favorite, and he truly embodies the spirit of this thread. He is up there with Tommy Emmanuel and Michael Hedges in my book -- just before they were well known. Why? -- He has the tunes... Brilliant songwriter with a wide range -- everything he has is top notch. I guess I just really dig the music he creates; I never get tired of hearing him play.

With over 30 years in the business RK should be ruling the world. He looks the part, sings like an angel and plays guitar like a demented demon.
He's also big in Japan (...but so is everyone!)




Ralph Towner name doesn't immediately come to mind when you go scroll through your list of 'greats', but he should be on that list. He's also one of Al Di Meola's favorite musicians, which is praise indeed.
