I'd buy a Yamaha FG800. And then earn the lost $50,000 back over the next 10 years of busking and small gigs.

I kind of have a limit on spending for a guitar. There was a time when I could have afforded a 6K guitar but wound up buying a 3K guitar instead. If I had a really valuable or rare guitar I would be too nervous to even play it. In retirement I have different priorities. I'm happy with what I have now and am focusing on playing more.

Hi Rusty 55,
If this is an investment I would go for a classical guitar.
A Daniel Friederich ( from early age 1960 to end of production) or a major historic spanish luthier like Francisco Simplicio.
These guitars see their price increasing every second..
But it is not so easy to found.
Steel string : A vintage tele or a strat
Certainly not on a Martin even if pre war UNLESS it is mint and not modified a hundred times as we always realizeÂ… ( sometimes too late..)

While I've exceeded my past spending limits on guitars, I don't think I could even name a $50,000 guitar off the top of my head. I'm not trying to sound sanctimonious, but if I had 50gs to spend on a guitar, I'd spend a whole lot less after having a Field Day on Emerald's 3D Builder https://emeraldguitars.com/3d-guitar-builder/...

I'd buy a full set of Emerald's current lineup, one of every model, in blue-green Teal carbon fiber - except the Balor, already have that.

I would need a shopping trip as I have not played many exceedingly expensive guitars (lest my lusting nature forced me to purchase one).

I would definitely have a Michael Watts Kostal on my list and round it out with a BR Froggy. I don't think there would be any money left, but if so I would add a carbon fiber for my beater.

I am also a retiree, mid sixties, playing fingerstyle.
I recently got a Collings OM1, a dream that miraculously became
reality, because some money surprisingly fell down the tree.
I had also got a Huss & Dalton Crossroads the month before.
I also own a 2014 Gibson L-OO TV and you know what ?
I still feel as much pleasure playing my Eastman AC122ce and
Seagull Performer worth ten percent of my Colings as well as my
2104 Martin OOO-18 or OODB Jeff Tweedy worth less than half of
the Collings.

My father used to say we were too poor to buy bad tools and it guided
me through my journey to find the best acoustic guitar for me, but my
journey also lead me to accept that practicing is more important that
gassing for "the best acoustic". So, I think I am finally done with my GAS.

I would put fifty grans aside for the nursing home...

If I had 50 grand, I would be putting in an inground guitar shaped swimming pool instead of the above ground one I am waiting to be installed

EDIT: Watching the off-course turn some are trying to take with a thread, which is intended to be fun and whimsical, I’ll save my response for later when people are being more true to the intention of the question and less judgmental.

Honestly I comfortably could if I wanted to,, BUT Just can't see me spending $50k on one, or even several . To be fair living where I do I have only ever played two custom luthier builds so I really have no notion of a luthier I would choose.

I am pretty content with my current stable but I might consider a 40 series Martin if I found one I really liked

I'd get Brian Fuller (Yahara Guitars) to build me one and I'd buy an airplane to fly out to Madison and fetch it. Only so much experience attaches to a guitar, no matter how costly.

I'd probably upgrade some of my builds to Brazilian. Otherwise, no real change to my GAS list. I already own a bunch of amazing stuff.

Agree with the Friedrich or Simplicio if you can find it. 10-15y ago you coulda bought a Torres in your price range which would have doubled by now in value.

Don't see a typical steel string as a predictable value gain.

Monteleone if you can find one in that range. Not my cup of tea but they seem to be pricier every day.

I would not use guitars as an investment mechanism.

If I had to spend $50K on a guitar, it would be a rarified classical. Or 2 Traugotts. But that seems silly too.
