Default Editing videos in Reaper

I can't seem to open mp4 files in Reaper created on my Galaxy 10 phone. I understand that I have to convert it, but to what and with what software? (preferably free, )

Thanks in advance!

I import media files (mp4 from my Motorola G6 phone) into a new Reaper track with no problem. Does the track not show up? You won't see video in the track, but it will be displayed when you open the video window from the View menu.

BUT...

The first thing you may need to do is install the proper encoder so Reaper recognizes and can work with your mp4 phone videos. I did this to resolve the same issue you are having and it worked flawlessly.

Here's a fairly easy to understand and follow video:

If you have your preferences set up for your project then Reaper does the conversion to match what you want as it imports your mp4 file.

If you need to re-encode your video for some reason to get it into Reaper, try a program called Handbrake. Video transcoding is not for the weak of heart and it's not terribly user-friendly, but it can do what you want for free.

Does Reaper not have a video driver/codec as a selectable additional part of its install bundle? Or do you have to use a third party encoder ?

Also just some food for thought for the future. IF you think you might be serious about doing music video. You may want to save up some funds and think about full featured Video editing software. Where you record, edit, mix and master the audio in Reaper (advisable to do so at 24 bit 48k ) and then export it into the Video Editing software project.
I happened to have already purchased Final Cut Pro X for Mac. I cant remember if your using a PC or a Mac but if it were me I would take a serious look at DaVinci Resolve could be $300 well spent https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIstG85OzZ6wIVsx-tBh0XAAXXEAAYASAAEgICzPD_BwE

If you're on Windows do you have VLC media player installed? This is the first step to add codecs to REAPER. If you're using REAPER 64 you'll need VLC 64. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

The free converter most people recommend seems to be Handbrake. https://handbrake.fr/

I think the best place to start on video in REAPER is this thread: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=82459 which includes info on installing codecs and using conversion software.

This subforum https://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=54 addresses video issues and includes info on the video processor plugin as well as codecs and the like.

Thanks everyone.

Frank, the VLC 64 bit did the trick, thank you.
