Default Would you choose the ES2 or go aftermarket

Just curious. I like the K&K mini, but is the ES2 just as well? I also have the LR Baggs Lyric. Dont have the chance to try the ES2. I play through a Bose Compact for home use only.

Thanks,
Dan

The ES2 as it's so easy to use and sounds good without having other gee-gaws in the signal chain.

ES2 should be good. I played a friend's 214ce at home and thought it sounded pretty ok. Now I heard another friend who is an amazing player at an open mic play through a Harbinger line array and while my Yamaha FGX5 sounded golden through that, his 214 Koa ltd. ed. sounded very anemic. It could have been the mixer they used and they plugged him into a non Hi-Z channel. Into the guitar side of the Bose (L1C I assume) you should be fine with ES2.

Just dont really care for knobs sticking out... But if its that good, maybe I can learn to like it... I do see a lot of pros using Taylors with the ES2, but maybe its bypassed somehow?????

Just my experience. I have had both and much prefer the ES-2.

I have both (K&K in a Martin D-16 and ES2 in a Taylor 214ce), and can get a good sound out of both of them. I do have to dial in different EQ settings on my PA (Fishman SA220) - with the K&K I have to boost the treble and cut the bass, and with the ES2 I keep the treble neutral and boost the bass. For both I cut the mids way down. The interesting thing is that even though the K&K is passive, it sends a hotter signal to my PA than does the battery powered ES2, at least with the volume knob set at the detent in the middle (straight up).

All my Taylor guitars have ES-2 and I like them. I get great sounds out of whatever I play through.

The secret weapon to livening up staid old ES2's and K&K's is the Tonedexter!

I think I would buy the guitar I like
and worry about the pickup later.
You are stuck with the knobs but
you can put whatever pup in there
you want. I've heard some es2 sound
great and some not so but could have
been the operator. If you have two guitars
you like equally. One with and one without
take the one without. There are better pickups
out there. But you'll have to pay for them.
The es2 comes with the axe.

Can't stand the ES2. All Taylors sound 99% the same with that system. From the cheapest to the most expensive models. If you play live, you're buying the pickup system, not the guitar. Horrible option, but that's just me.

I’m very happy with my Taylor with ES2. I find it needs a bit of attention to the sensor pressure now and then to get the right balance but otherwise I just plug in and play. Sometimes I go direct to a mixer via a DI box but usually go through my Tonebone Pz-pre; any guitar pickup benefits from an external preamp.

I have one Taylor but we have three other guitars where I’ve installed K&K. They all sound great.

I personally always go aftermarket as pickups change from year to year. I would rather have a pickup that I can rip out vs something a bit more invasive. With that said, it’s hard to find a Taylor without the ES2 installed so there’s that.

That would be my main gripe about ES2. If you leave it plugged in the battery runs down.
