Default You've Got A Friend (James Taylor version) by Carole King

This is my cover of the James Taylor version of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend." This song was included on his album Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. His single was released in 1971, reaching number 1 on the USA Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the UK Singles Chart.

I think this song speaks highly of who Carole King is.

This song also reminds me of the AGF. I have seen so many examples of people reaching out here to help someone when they can.

Thank you for listening!

- Glenn

Once again Glenn, well done with playing and vocals.

Though most here on the AGF probably recognize the headstock, I'm not familiar with many models and was wondering what guitar you're playing (and what strings are on it). Don't know how to describe it but it has a very mellow sound.

Thanks for posting Glenn, always enjoy listening to you.

You hit a soft spot with this one, Willow. Too many memories of teenage angst, the coming of age and the girl who got away…
In the dictionary of my life this would be the definition of melancholy.
But, all in all, it’s good to know I’ve got a friend singing it for me.

Thank you John!

How nice of you to take time to listen and then offer comments here. Much appreciated! I'm so glad you felt this came out well.

The guitar is a handmade James Olson small jumbo or "SJ", cedar top over East Indian Rosewood back and sides. It was built in Circle Pines, Minnesota in 1995. I bought it used from a fellow AGF member in Long Island, NY a few years ago.

It does have a mellow sound, kind of velvety in character. I use Martin SP 80/20 light gauge strings on it. The 80/20 formulation has a little brighter trebles which help on this guitar because it is so mellow sounding. These particular strings used on the guitar in this video have been on the guitar for a couple of months now. Normally, I would have changed them before recording the video, but they still sounded good so I left them alone.

I really appreciated the sound of the Olson SJ on this song. It was just perfect for the very mellow mood of this song.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments, John!

Hi Frank,

Thanks so much for taking time to listen and comment! I always appreciate hearing from you!

I am sorry about the melancholy feelings this song elicits for you. But you do have a friend in me, Frank!

When this song came out in 1971 my wife and I were newly married, 23 years old, living in Plano, TX. Those first years we spent down there were difficult in some ways because of starting new jobs and getting our feet on the ground financially, but also those years were one long honeymoon. So for me, too, this song brings out very strong memories, but for me, generally good ones.

I hope all is well for you Frank! Enjoy your family!

Thank you Mike!

I'm so glad you are listening! Thank you for your kind words of encouragement!

Your "Good Friends Remembered" song actually reminded me of "You've Got A Friend," so I dusted off my memory and recorded this.

I hope you are doing well! Take care!

Thank you so much, Marty!

I'm so pleased to know you are watching!

And I'm so pleased and humbled that you use the word "graceful." I had to do quite a few takes of this until I felt anywhere close to that. I thought this song would be easy to do, but it's got a lot more to it than I remembered. It's been decades since I played this song last! But it was good, in the end, to rediscover this great old song.

I hope you and your wife and doing well!

- Glenn
