Saved! Which guitar did you almost sell, but came to your senses?
Hi all,
Just had a close call with a guitar, that I was initially thinking of selling. It is a Cocobolo Taylor GS. I've had it since early Fall 2020, and have tried to play in my (2) guitar styles, as the 'only' instrument, and it was't the best match. The guitar uses red (Adirondack) spruce for the bracing, and the top. It has a punch, clarity, and note separation that is uncanny. I thought it was too much - for my switching from rhythm to finger style in a single song. I had occasion to record a song yesterday for the first time, with a Walnut Taylor that I specced with Sitka bracing for this reason -- which turns out to have been exactly the right decision, as that guitar is generally perfect for my style(s) so far. However, last night, as I was listening to some track loops of the rhythm guitar, I became curious what the Cocobolo / Adi would sound as a lead instrument over top. I was stunned at how well the tone profile fit into the song. I immediately pulled the "For Sale" listing down, and am calling this a keeper. Clearly, I just need to learn more styles! So, now the question for you:

Martin custom shop 0000-18. The last guitar I sold, the buyer wanted to fly out and give me a hug. This would've been another one
This guitar came out on top (albeit barely) in a head to head comparison with an OM28 Authentic. Great guitar. Thin finish Grade 8 Adirondock top Abalone logo Indian rosewood binding https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=587803 Last edited by Mr. Paul; 01-18-2021 at 11:40 AM. |

Over the years, I don’t think there is one guitar I’ve owned that I haven’t thought about selling at one point or another. Even if it was something I was perfectly satisfied with, there is always something higher on the food chain to catch my fancy. However, there is a difference between toying with the idea, and actually listing it in the AGF classifieds. Once I’ve put it there, it’s mentally 2/3 out the door already. Just a matter of time before it is physically gone.

Sadly I wish I could play along but I’ve sold everything I put up for sale. I wish I could get at least two of them back.

I have to agree wit Brendan...I've considered selling/trading every guitar I own. But then I come to my senses...kind of? There are a couple I wished I'd have kept too.

There has only been once. I listed a Goodall GC on consignment and thought about it every day for 2 or 3 weeks before I called up and said I wanted to pull it back. The shop was understanding and most kind. This GC is unusually good and to this day I say to myself — what was I thinking? I’ve always joked that it must have been built on a Wednesday. I feel lucky about this one.

There was a near-by guitar show that was scheduled for right
about when stuff started cancelling because of covid. I had a Gibson j-45 kind of bug and had planned to take the guitar that Ken Stika made for me 18 years ago as a possible trade. The show was cancelled, I've since ended up with a 57 Country Western and the luthier is refretting my Ken Stika guitar. Good guitars made by people that aren't famous aren't worth much usually. I think it would be stoopid to sell or trade it now... The poor luthier seems overworked to the point of being frazzled during these lockdowns... anyone else see that? -Mike |

For years it was my J-45. I finally came to terms with it physically. Plus my wife declared that she doesn't lke it when I sell gear and does like it when I buy gear so I'm not selling guitars etc. anymore.

Visiting Guitars
Over the last few years I've had what I'm coming to call visiting guitars and they've been wonderful guests, Martin OM-21 Special, SCGC H-12, J-45, Collings 0002H. I've appreciated them all and was glad to know them. My recent guest is a Kopp K-35. I'm getting the feeling he may be moving in permanently but I've been wrong before.
But through out it all my SCGC D-12 has an unwavering staying power and isn't leaving until after I go out the door feet first. |

I bought a 2010 Martin Grand J-35e, I traded it ten years later for a Taylor 612- The second one was available when I also had available funds- I bought another- I bought a 2016 taylor 562 12 string- Traded it for a 514 V-class. Not more than a year later I bought it back. I traded off my Martin J-40 and this one was the worst choice- not because I didn’t get a fair trade, which I did! I just love that J-40 above all others- When I saw my traded J-40 listed- I had to go get it back. The 612 and 514 while great guitars just didn’t have the relationship with me that these other models have. |

I almost listed my huss and dalton tom-r once. I had myself convinced that other shiny object in my online shopping cart was better. Decided to give it a few days to think about it. Thankfully I came to my senses.
