Does a pickguard deaden the sound?

Especially after taking it off after having it on for some time, I hear a clear difference. That applies for both thin plasticky and wooden pickguards. Taking the picguard off leaves a mess behind anyway, I dont want to damage my guitar.

None of my 15-ish guitars has any pickguard of any sort.
