For cleans?
Whatever meets your power requirements in the Roland Jazz Chorus line. Or... Find a 100W Yamaha from early 1980s. Those are not tube amps but you did ask for clean sounds.

Tone King Meteor II 20 if you can find one.
or a new Bartel amp. Fender on steroids. |

Your post is a little confusing since it sounds like you're looking for an amp to drive "Celestion Pulsonic 12" cones (going) inside a Marshall 1971 4x12 Cabinet)...? These are Greenback speakers -I think- known for their classic British sound, not something usually associated with the "super clean sound" you're looking for. You also say you'd "consider buying an old valve amp". Aren't valve amps and tube amps the same thing...?
Anyway, putting aside your Marshall cabinet, I agree with previous posts that a Fender combo amp like a Deluxe Reverb or Princeton are good starting points, if they'll give you enough power/volume... not sure what your setting/use is. |

There really isn't a "best", but only what sounds and works best for you. I would seriously consider going to a store with a large selection of amps - both tube and solid state, and try them out. You may find that a solid state amp has the sound you want and save yourself a lot of money, or maybe not. Point being let Your Ears be the judge, not what you think others want to see you playing. I'm not set against tube amps and have a small one myself, but they are generally heavier, much more expensive, and require more maintenance than solid state amps. For guitarists wanting to get real tube output stage distortion I'd recommend a smaller low wattage amp rather than a large beast unless you're playing in a huge venue.

So if I am understanding you have a speaker cab or will have. So you are looking for an amp to drive that (correct ?)
And you already have an SS amp and are thus looking for a tube amp (correct ?) So it it were me I would skip any combo amps and look at tube amp heads, from 15 watt up.. As mentioned economical wise the Bugera is a good choice also Egnater has some good value offerings as well. The suggestion to go try go out and audition some in person is spot on (if you can) .

Fender tube amps are known for their clean sound . Vox do pretty well at clean as well . If you want to get down and dirty , Marshall is all you need to know .
If you do go the route of finding a head to work with your existing cabinet , try to remember about matching impedances . If you believe that you need to avoid tubes for a clean sound , you have been mislead somewhere along the path . Tube amps tend to sound their best when running at full volume and modulating your volume via the guitar or a volume pedal . |

Plugging an acoustic into an electric guitar amp will not sound good. You'll need a dedicated acoustic amp. My choice in those would be a Fishman Mini, Artist, or Performer.
For me no tube amp can compare with an original "Silverface" Fender Deluxe Reverb. Has to be an original though as the reissue Deluxe Reverbs don't sound nearly as good. In #2 position would be an original "Blackface" Fender Super Reverb. But be sure your back is up to lugging it around! You'll need a healthy checkbook, but their price is well worth it. |

I'll second this. Soooo much headroom from a Twin Reverb, unless your're doing a stadium gig, you'll never need what it can do.
Listen to Johnny Cash songs with Luther Perkins. Luther played a Tele thru a Twin. From what I'm reading latey since I am about to join the ranks of knuckhead guitar players who want to play lap steel, Pedal and Lap Steel guys like the Twins too.

welcome to the AGF!
you may want to take your guitar to a big box store and try as many amps as you can. then you can do followup research and purchase the one that you feel is best for you. play music!

Another vote here for the Tone King Imperial. Those amps are specifically voiced for clean tones with massive head room. If you like look up some Jamie Harrison videos on YouTube to get an idea of what this amp sounds like.

I would recommend a Friedman Dirty Shirley with the 3 way gain switch. Absolutely intoxicating cleans.
Anyone suggesting that tubes are inferior for clean tones doesn't know what they're talking about, lots of the most expensive hi-fi equipment are tube amps and it all boils down to gain structure for starters.

+1, with a caveat. Tube guitar amps are voiced for electric guitar, which generally means the EQ is not flat like an acoustic amp and the high end is limited by the lack of a high frequency speaker. The typical 10" or 12" driver in a guitar amp tops out at around 3 to 5kHz, which will kill some of the sparkle of an acoustic guitar.
Not tube powered, but how about the Boss Katana Artist? 100W, extensive modeling available to shape your sound, and there is an acoustic guitar preamp option in the options.

I have a '70 JMP Marshall 50 watt head for sale. It's expensive, but never goes down in price and sounds better than most everything else out there put together. Great cleans too through channel 1. $2500 + shipping.
