Default Local wood for the next spec build

7I cannot make up my mind about which wood to use on my next build featuring American wood. Here are the choices.

Mesquite....think mahogany sound

Myrtle.

Black walnut

Cherry. Just bought a plank

Oak?

Default local woods

I'd prefer myrtle most times. There is no wood from the 48 states that is consistently more beautiful. Mostly though, it depends upon the sound the buyer wants to get and perhaps how tight the curves need to be. Forgetting all that, cherry would be my last choice.

Thanks for your input Bard. I personally am kind of smitten with the cherry. Oak too.

That is some spectacular oak. You don't often see oak with such pretty brown heartwood and such nice curl.. And it makes a monster of a guitar.

Myrtle, or (though you did not offer this as a choice) Osage Orange!

I can't decide between the cherry (that is a particularly beautiful board with the sapwood AND I remember your last cherry guitar that was beautiful) and the Oak, your brother has built some remarkable oak parlors.

I say batch build and do the two at once, Cherry, Oak. Why not?

I wish I had some Osage orange. I will put one mark in the Myrtle column

I was thinking of that very guitar when I bought this plank. I agree that the oak is just cool on so many levels, looks, vintage vibe, sound, etc.

I agree, the mesquite is really nice and very uncommon. It’s really old and does not smell like much.

It’s knockout. Anything that sounds like hog is A+ in my book. That set is really gorgeous.

I've built two with mesquite, I'm quite interested in a professional opinion.
