Aloha Ty
Howzit TY,
I enjoy your original music, site, and experienced perspectives here and elsewhere. I know that like me, you champion the CMC641. I'm curious, I may be in the market for another one. Where would you look for a used one? Any dealers who specialize in those or a specialist you may know of who has a line of that model? Thanks in advance! alohachris |

AC,
It's not difficult to champion a mic that sounds like that. Some location audio guys sell them off from time to time. they hangout on a newsgroup called rec.arts.movies.production.sound You could always post an ISO or looking to buy message. Maybe you already know this. When I bought my second mic, they asked me for my serial number, pulled the graph at the factory and picked a new one that matched the one I had. Gotta love that. I'm working on a madrigal CD now using both mics in XY to two channels of a Sound Devices 744T. Six a cappella singers in a big church. They are up in the chancery facing out over the pews. No one in the church but us. I chose the distance between them and the mics by how much of the room I want to hear in a pair of Sony MDR 7506 headphones. On one the tracks, Janet sings a soprano part that's way high and syncopated. There's a proper name for that, I can't remember right now. She really opens up when she does that, so I moved her several feet behind everyone and asked her to aim it up towards the ceiling. On playback, they were pretty jazzed. You can very plainly hear her, but she's on a totally separate plane behind the front five due to the distance from the mic and because she was aiming it up and not at the mics. Regards, Ty Ford |

This just in from ramps. I don't know Rado personally, but he's been a regular poster there. The MK4 capsule is a cardioid. The MK41 is the supercardioid. That's what I have. The MK4 will hear more room, but that might not be a bad thing for you.
This is a modular system, power supply and capsules. You can always get different capsules. Thank You Ty!
Aloha Ty,
Thank you for your referrals on that great mic. I will follow-up later today. Still at work here now. BTW, I think churches and small concert halls offer the best recording sound of all venues. I think it's cool that you can use that church space to optimize for sound. That sounds like a fun project. More Later, Ty. Mahalo a nui, alohachris |

As it turns out, one of the group is a member of the church, so we get to record there. This is a BIG old brick Episcopalian Church in Ellicott City, MD.
I don't really know how tall the peak of the roof is, but I'll guess over 40 feet. It's at least 40 feet from side to side. Carpeted. Cushions in pews. If I pull back much more than 5-6 feet, the reverb starts to swamp the vocals, especially on the quicker tunes. We set up where the choir is in this pix, in front of the altar. http://www.stjohnsec.org/music-and-choirs There's one step up (at the rail) from the congregation to the chancel and three steps up from there to the altar. Most everyone I put on the main level of the chancel and the short ones go one step up, just to keep the mouths on axis. Simple coincident XY (with a little tweek, so not exactly 90 degrees.) Howdy lads,
Sorry, I have been on holiday and haven't taken the time to read the forum the time I was there. I don't have the bucks to get either another M179 or MK-012 right now... but thanks for the link, AC. |
