What a great thread, and excellent work by all who’ve posted so far.
I recently found the goldmine that is Carl’s library of guitar demos, and have started learning a few of them. Will aim to share them here if I record any.

I knew he was a great player from previous things of his I’d seen, but the sheer amount and quality of ideas he’s able to produce (and I’m assuming largely improvise) for those demos is staggering.

Just posted this in play&write, but it also belongs in here. This is Carl's tune from a Collings O-1 demo:

That is really well done, Tom! It sounds really good, and you are getting a very nice, solid sound with your flat picking!

Really well done!

We're kind of getting a master's class from Carl Miner on how to flat pick with great tone and style.

Thanks Glenn! I feel like I'm getting there with the sound -- at least getting closer to capturing the sound that I'm hearing. And I feel like there's some good progress with the picking, BUT when I compare to Carl's recordings it make me feel like I'm still a million miles away! (or thousands of hours, I guess).

I'm currently working on a different tune of his -- one that's testing some more flatpicking skills. I'll probably post a 75% speed video on my other thread to show which technique is giving me troubles!

Tom

Here's an attempt at Carl's Lowden S35 demo tune:

I decided to start a separate thread because I ended up comparing the sounds of three different guitars using the same Carl Miner theme. I compared my Collings OM1A Deep Body to my Santa Cruz OM/PW and then compared my Olson SJ (cedar/rosewood). I felt that the guitar comparison theme might take this thread off course.

Still, I wanted to contribute to this thread because I have appreciate Carl Miner's playing so much lately.

The video on YouTube is here:

I have had this haunting melody running through my head all night long. Please note that I did not attempt to flat pick this piece as Carl Miner plays it. I started out flat picking it but realized I do not have Carl's skill with a flat pick. So instead, I finger picked this, where my skills can at least come closer to doing justice to Carl's haunting theme. Also, I did not try to duplicate Carl's version of this song, but rather used his thematic ideas for my own version.

Thanks for listening!

- Glenn
Just beautiful Glenn. Superb playing and sound!!

I'll get us started with the two pieces I stole from him that I play the most. Note that I haven't heard the originals in a few months, so there is a good chance that I've changed them quite a bit, but that's part of the fun.

I really need to work on my hybrid picking so that I can keep the bass going when playing the melody!

Let's hear your pieces!

Good work indeed. That melody of the first one in particular is stuck in my head!!
