@mountainmaster:

I considered the Abel armrest. It has a classier look, and I was convinced I was going to get it until I found the Armadillo. The things that made me not go with the Abel armrest:
  • It doesn't look like something I can put on my instrument and forget about. It looks like I'd have to remove it to put my instrument in a case or gig bag.
  • When using my Guitar Lift accessory (which suction cups onto the back of the guitar), it's questionable if a conflict might be generated between the two accessories. They would only conflict in certain positions, but...why worry about accessories bumping into each other if I don't have to?
  • And a very low level and superficial reason to go with the Armadillo is that if your instrument is a beater or just loved long and hard enough, the Armadillo kind of looks like it'd go well with such an instrument. Good for the camp fire guitar playing parent sort you know?

Alternative:

Add the bevel to your arm.

https://www.guitarwebshop.com/Armpads (Swiss site)

The Luva have many styles, lengths, sizes. All with plastic insert so arm rests comfortably in that and there are no sharp edges to feel regardless of guitar. Feels different--some may or may not like it--but works well. A clever design.

At least it's another possibility.

Made in Brazil. Luva has their own Brazilian website with different prices, but I'm not sure how they are set up to order from currently. In the past, there was some language difficulties and so I purchased from Switzerland. [ http://www.matepis.com.br/EN/ ]

The Swiss site worked well.

Shipment was timely.

It is a good thing you didn't. I sent an inquiry to the manufacturer with this close up picture of my Rainsong's bevel.

This was his reply:

Thank you for the pictures.
If I see it correctly, the curve at the edge of the frame is quite large, too large for a secure hold of the armrest.
Too bad.

Greetings
Andreas

I don't see how that is any more comfortable than simply wearing a long sleeve shirt.

There is a long, hard plastic piece sewn down the length of the arm band--a second layer of cloth secures it inside the stretchy cloth arm tube. Your arm rests inside, along this slightly curved, but very hard inner piece of plastic--instead of on the sharp edge of the guitar. You do not feel the edge of the guitar at all. It's even more comfortable and feels very stable if the guitar has a bevel as well.

It is entirely different than a shirt or even other elastic arm tubes sold to protect players forearms that are also sold to provide just a "bit" more protection. For some players, that minimal extra padding is enough. But the Luva takes it to another level of protection and comfort.

There's really no comparison with other products that I've found. YMMV

Yes indeed: YMMV. I normally wear long sleeve shirts and then I do not need an armrest at all. Just when it is hot and I am wearing short sleeves I lately found that those sharp edges are starting to bother me.

In this situation a thick armpad is only going to make things more hot and sweaty for me.

Just to be clear, yes, it's thicker than a thin cotton shirt sleeve, but it's not a blanket. It's a stretch sleeve that isn't there for the padding, as it provides little if any, but it exists to hold the insert in the proper position. The insert is what makes it valuable.

For me, even a thin long sleeve shirt at 95F (35C) is sticky and sweaty. The Luva sleeve is not 'that' much more uncomfortable. Whatever discomfort exists is offset by the benefit the edge protection it provides, IMO.

Personal ability to deal with less than perfect comfort levels can vary greatly person to person, as always.

It appears it is not valuable for your needs.

Living in a climate with temperatures reaching 118 degrees I've learned to deal with less then perfect comfort levels; keeps me humble.

Hi AC,
I also use the Luva rigid arm pad. I purchased mine from Luthier Music Corporation in Manhattan, NY. I just looked for their url for it and found that they no longer carry the arm pad.

Not to mention the age factor. When I was young I could not even imagine ever needing accessories like these.

This was his reply:
The Abel worked well on my Shorty but did not fit the WS(too deep). FWIW

Interesting. I guess Andreas wanted to be better safe than sorry.
Body depth should not be a problem because the current standard size is 92 to 137 mm (3.62 to 5.39 inch).

Anyway, I think I will go for the Armadillo.

I got my Armadillo armrest today. The suction cups are holding fine on the satin finish of my Rainsong while I am playing.
However, when I put the guitar back in its stand with the Armadillo still attached the armrest comes off after a while. During a gig that could be a problem but since I mainly play at home I don't mind.
