GHS strings - underrated?
I've used GHS strings on 4 different guitars.
-6 string -12 string - baritone -Nashville or 'High Strung' tuning. I've not been disappointed with any of them. Well made and well packaged and surprisingly affordable. I don't see them mentioned a lot here on the AGF.

My Kinscherff High Noon was delivered with GHS strings and I used them for a couple of years. They were fine, although I have been using John Pearce for some time now.

I use GHS phosphor bronze lights exclusively on my Mcknight/:Poling or any other instrument I acquire that leans toward the bright end of the spectrum. I buy the 6 packs when they are on sale - the new packaging ensures freshness (each string sealed in it's own package.

Have you ever tried the John Pearse Folk fingerpicking PJ116 strings made by Thomastik-Infeld? All 6 strings are wound.

I recently started using their Phosphor Bronze and am also trying the 85/15 Vintage Bronze that is also working out well.
The real standout in their line up for me are the Pure Nickel mandolin strings. Unbelievable tone out of these things. Very classic "Loar" tone out of sub-$100,000 instruments. Close as I'll get. |

They're fine strings. I like their burnished nickel electric strings a lot. They Doyle Lawson LSB 250 are my absolute favorite mandolin strings, and I've tried most all mandolin strings in my former life as a Bluegrass mandolin player.
In guitar strings, one of their most interesting offerings is what I consider a traditional medium set where all the wound strings end in "6" - 0.026, 0.036, 0.046, and 0.056. If you have a guitar and want a little more punch in the mids or a slightly stiffer feel, that set is a very good choice. I don't think they're underrated so much as they are just a smaller company and they don't produce as many sets in a year compared to D'Addario, Martin, and the like. |

I do remember another thread raving about them so I got a set of phosphor bronze for my Eastman all Sapele GA and I really LOVE them after the initial break-in period. Definitely will get them again.

It's funny - through most of the '80s & '90s GHS Boomers & Nickel Rockers were my choice for my electrics. I never really explored their acoustic strings. I may have to give them a try.

I have GHS strings on my mandolin, and GHS boomers have been the only strings on my Strat for decades. I've never tried their acoustic guitar strings, though.

GHS strings are kind of big in the banjo world, maybe because banjo gods J.D. Crowe and Sonny Osborne are endorsers.
I tried out the Pure Nickel mandolin strings on HHP's recommendation and liked them so much I bought several more sets. I don't think I've ever bought their guitar strings, though. Last edited by grasser; 01-13-2018 at 09:25 PM. Reason: spelling |

I as well... Bruce... have never been disappointed with any that I have used over the years (whether for 6 or 12 string guitar). The 2 standouts for me are the Sunbeam roundwounds, and the Bright Bronze Contact Core (the brightest in their lineup). They even sell a custom 12 string set at Elderly which seems to match closely to Leo Kottke's 12 string gauges that he has used.

Interesting - I had long ago changed to the custom gauges referenced in an older article about what Leo uses. Slightly lighter, in some courses, than the Elixr's that the LKSM shipped with. The only brand that allowed me to get close was GHS - ordered a 6 string set and then individuals to fill it out. Looks like Elderly has done the work for me, and the cost per full set is a bit lower than my mix-n-match.
Lifespan is not near as good as the Elixr's, of course. But at $10.50 a set, I don't really mind having to change more frequently. |

I believe this is a chart made by GHS.
Based on this chart I ordered the Silk & Bronze for a 6-string and an overly bright 12-string guitar. They have been excellent, tamed the jangle on the 12 and added warmth and depth to the 6, nicely balanced on both, very impressed.
