Default Little Improv Piece....

Greetings,
I don't think I've ever posted a clip here before, so it's probably about time.

A friend asked me to spend some time with a Gauge 87 microphone, so I just set it up and started noodling with a few ideas. I would have normally Eq'd it some to adjust for the bassy tone, but that wasn't the exercise.

It's a Larrivee D10 custom into the Gauge 87 into a True Systems P2 analog with reverb from TC's VSS3 (no EQ or compression). I really liked the overall tone very much....many things are sounding too bright for my ears these days (usually as a result of the presence boost from the typical Chinese manufactured mics), but this settled about where I wanted it.

Very nice noodling!! I like the warm sound of the guitar and really enjoyed your playing. Thanks for posting this. BTW - was that in standard tuning or did you use an alternate?

Great noodling. Care to talk about those "few ideas", i.e. what were you using as a guide or central theme.

Cass,

Really nice tone! An interesting brooding piece, very mellow.

Can't believe the price on that Gauge 87, lot of mike for the money!

The guitar/mic sound great - love the song, too.

I'm a bit of a sucker for that kind of music - all the pretty things going on, just makes me happy to hear it. I'm a huge fan of William Ackerman's old stuff, kind of reminds me of it in a way somehow (but different).

It inspires, thanks for posting it.

Smooth top end. You recall what setting did you use on the VSS?

Thanks for the listens, everyone!

Let's see here...the tuning is (low to high) Eb G# C G Bb Eb It's one of those "vibey" tuning where you just strum it open and things happen.

I liked the fat lower mids that I got--everyone seems to want to gut that region these days (and trust me--I know ;-)). I'd move it a little more off axis to get rid of that proximity, then I think that's where I'd want it.

Yep--that mic is $149, so I guess I'll have to buy one. I don't have any affiliation with the company at all (otherwise I'd demand one!), but I get irritated sometimes because us fingerpickin' types don't ever get any soundclips! Always with the strumming, but I digress... I'll have to check on the reverb settings--if you've got a VSS3 I can send you the patch if you pm me with an addy. One thing I'm sure about is rolling off the verb around 400hz or so with a faster decay time so I can get that sustain on the top end and keep the mud out. Probably a 4 second decay time.

I'll probably develop this stuff into an actual coherent piece, but it seems to help me to record things and then go listen to see where I could have gone. I was heavily influenced by the early Windham Hill sound like many of us, so any of those comparisons are flattering.

I haven't written anything for guitar in a long time, but hanging out here has really inspired me to get my act together! Thanks again for your time.
