Default Minor chord fingering alternative

I noticed on David Gilmour's new DVD that he appears to stay away from using a full index finger barre chord when playing a minor chord. For instance, with an F#m, he'll barre only the F#, C# and A with his index finger, and place his pinky on the 4th string F#, and ring on the 5th C#. (Thumbs hits the lower F#) Not a big deal, but I wonder if anyone uses this approach and finds it easier to add a few passing notes using this method. Any thoughts?

I often use the "wrap around thumb" version of barre chords rather than the traditional version. (even for the "A" position) I find them easier on the hand. We had a thread on this issue in the last several months...don't remember the title, though.

How hard can music be? There's only 12 notes.

I usually barre; that way I don't have to think about it as much
