Solution to the hissing sound of fishman sa220
Pardon me for starting this thread. I just can not recall which thread that discussed about the hissing sound of Fishman SA229.
I might have a solution, if not, at least it could drastically reduced the hissing sound coming from Aux In & Channel 1 On Channel 2, set at 12 o'clock the following knobs Gain, High, Mid & Low Turn on FIshman. Turn Master volume to 9 o'clock; silent. Turn Master Volume beyond 9'oclock; low hissing sound On Channel 2, set ANY of the knobs H, M , L even minutely to the left or to the right, it would produced the usual hissing sound. I wrote to Fishman last Dec 2015 of my finding. I was acknowledged but they never come back to me. So, I hope what I did can be repeated in your Fishman to drastically reduced the hissing sound as well. |

Hi Angel,
Welcome to the AGF! I see this is your first post. Regarding the hissing sound from your Fishman amp, it sounds to me like a gain problem, that you don't have enough signal from your guitar or at the input to your amp preamp so that the overall amp gain has to be turned up too high. It sounds like you need either higher input levels to the Fishman preamp channel or a higher gain setting there at the preamp so that you can get more overall volume without hiss. I am just guessing from a distance, of course. Best of luck! - Glenn

I haven't encountered any hissing-type problem on my SA220 in my five years or so of steady use, fortunately. And Glenn's assessment, by the way, makes a lot of sense to me, if you haven't checked it from that angle yet...

fongle, thank you for correction, it is SA220 & not SA229.
Glenn, before I bought my unit, I researched on it. I knew of the inherent problem of the hissing sound and I still bought because I like the portability and loud volume from its speaker. Even at 9 o'clock, the volume is strong enough. About my experiment, adjusting the Gain of either Channel 2 or 1, it did not affect the hissing sound at all. It remained on just one level. The sales rep at Fishman admitted the present of the hissing sound. He said they have never experimented the way I did. He offered no solution not did he ever get back to me. The hissing sound does not bother me at all caused as I turned up the volume of the music file being played, it completely drowned the hissing sound. |

I do recall seeing some mention of hissing from the SA220. Not sure if it was on this site or not and I think there's a youtube Vid showing a guy pulling his apart and shielding certain parts to fix the problem. Have a search about.

Not a video, but detailed instructions on taming the buzz. Looks like it would void the warranty, though.

Mine had a bad XLR jack in chanel 2. Fishman sent me the part with instructions how to replace it. It consisted of opening it up just like this fella did. I could have easily shielded the cables while I was in there. Alas, mine doesn't hiss so much that it bothers me (it does hiss though).

No hissing after two years of use since new. Or, maybe my tinnitus is masking it?
