Default Fernando Sor | Souvenir de Russie op. 63 for two guitars

Fernando Sor | Souvenir de Russie op. 63 for two guitars | Patrik Kleemola and Timo Korhonen, guitars

On this day 10th of July 1839 died the Catalan composer and guitarist Fernando Sor. He was forced to leave Spain at the age of 35 in the aftermath of Napoleon's withdrawal of the French groups from Spain. He made a great success in Paris, London and Moscow besides being a virtuoso of the "Spanish guitar" also as a ballet composer and writing songs with piano/guitar accompaniment.

The last years of his life were shadowed by the death of his only daughter and the lifelong refusal of returning to his native Spain. His last work Souvenir de Russie op. 63 for two guitars was published in Paris during the last year of his life and shows his creative quality being as strong as ever and his death being sadly premature.
