Well I played it safe and canceled sale (at least I think I did,I initiated a refund). I think it will sell soon. Thanks for the input. I'm not selling it for the rent money so I'll wait for a sale that won't have me anxious about it. Time for an AGF bump

I sold two guitars to people that were not living in US.

I shipped them in both cases to family members.

They were planning on visiting within the next few months and the agreement was the family member would hold it for them.

I got the money just fine, shipped them and it all worked out ok.

Yeah it may have been just fine but it just didn't smell right to me. I hope I didn't deny someone their dream guitar though.

Haven't read through all the responses, but time was it had to be shipped to a confirmed address via Paypal - not sure if Reverb payments are the same, but at that point, the "friend" would have to buy it then get it to Brazil.

If your spidey sense is going off - probably best to trust it.

Default Hard pass

Strikes me as the 21st century equivalent of asking someone to accept a two party out of state check as a payment. Too many ways it could go wrong and leave you without your money or your guitar.

I’ve had similar experience shipping to third parties ..the urgency in this case seemed to be so that the third party had the guitar in time to transport it to Brazil….personally as soon as I receive payment I consider an instrument the property of the buyer and send it to whatever address they specify….I sure as heck want it to the case when I’m the buyer….in most situations the buyer is the one at risk once payment is rendered….

I don’t think the buyer can pull back the funds unless you approve an unusual payment form.
Once Reverb says payment has cleared, Reverb holds the funds until you drop it off and the tracking tag shows enroute. You then get paid.
Use Reverb Safe Shipping and if they claim it as lost or stolen in transit, Reverb will cover it.

As long as the shipping request is documented and you use Reverb to generate the shipping label you should be covered. I see you've already canceled, but you also could have contacted Reverb customer support and had them review the listing and sale to get assurance that you were covered shipping to a different person/address. They would have created a case in their system and reviewed the buyer info. If they told you that you were good, then you'd have been covered.

A middle ground: have the buyer have his friend buy the guitar. You ship to the friend when Reverb gives the go-ahead.

I did something similar a couple years back; the buyer was an American ex-pat (living in Italy) whose children still live in the US.
I required payment by USPS MO, with a wait time to ensure they were legitimate, and shipped to the daughter. It all went fine.

Wow, that's like a textbook example of a scam letter.

Smart move. If sincere, that buyer will have plenty more opportunities to get their dream guitar.

I see OP already made a decision and I think the right one. When it comes to selling online I am only going to ship to a confirmed paypal address from the buyer. What they do with the guitar after that is up to them but shipping to a third party is almost always going to be a scam.
