Ryan’s guitars are so so beautiful and sound just as good. Hope to play one some day! Congrats, Scallywag.

It's been a minute since I've posted an update. I've been quite busy preparing to move back to New York City! Ryan too has been busy French polishing a shellac finish onto my guitar. These photos really do speak for themselves and I feel compelled to keep my commentary to a minimum. That said, I can't wait to hold this thing in the sunshine and take in the rays. These woods are otherworldly!

Thanks as always for following along

Matt

How did I miss this build before? Stunning. Really nice walnut and the rosette is outstanding. Lucky you!

Default Ryan Gerber Build - RL15.5 - Swiss Moon Spruce | Black Walnut

Hello AGF! It's been a minute since I posted an update. Been busy moving, and then I headed overseas for a few weeks for a proper honeymoon. In that time my RL15.5 has essentially been completed, so now I get to unveil the guitar in its final stages.

Please recall that all along I'd envision this to be a "sunny" instrument, visually speaking. My mind's eye longed for bright visuals that would evoke the mesmerizing motion of fire. During the process of deciding on materials for this guitar Ryan floated the idea of using this spectacular Australian Sheoak, which was to adorn the rosette and the headstock, more prominently. Through conversation the idea of using it as a fretboard material arose (or more accurately, to inlay a slab of the Sheoak into a rosewood fretboard). Ryan presented some mockups and, though I think he was a wee bit hesitant at first, decided to proceed.

Ryan wanted to avoid something resembling an art project. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but his aesthetic leans towards allowing the natural materials to speak for themselves. I told him I wanted something that makes me think of the sun, but made only with natural woods and free of interpretive inlays and whatnot. I wanted the woods to simply be what they are... incredibly beautiful materials in their own right.

For me, he has delivered. The natural Sheoak is just incredible to look at, and the results are pretty spectacular.

These photos were taken at a stage where the French polish process wasn't yet complete, and the fretboard had yet to receive any kind of finish treatment. The colors all come together wonderfully in the finished instrument, which I'll share photos of in the very near future.

Thanks for following!

Matt

P.S. We decided to go with this Madagascar Rosewood bridge which seemed to be the perfect compliment to both the fiery sheoak and the darker Rosewood bindings. I'm very happy with it!

The fingerboard and rosette are both unreal...and based on Ryan's prior Walnut guitars this one is sure to have a tone worthy of the appointments. Congrats!

Truly magnificent. I love the 3D rosette, and the colours throughout just match beautifully.

Holy Helios!!

Magnificent choices everywhere, scallywag. Ryan has exceeded the design brief by several Astronomical Units. Are you sure he’s a genuine Earthling?

So artistic and absolute fire and killer woods! I don't think you have to worry about it reminding you of the sun.

AGF! The guitar arrived this week and I've been able to spend 4-5 hours with it at this point. I'm going to give it few more hours before getting into detail on what I have here, but so far I'm quite pleased. It hasn't taken long for my hands to feel at home. Admittedly I haven't been able to play much over the past two months so I'm still getting back into game shape. All guitars are feeling a bit strange at the moment!

Anywho I can happily say that those big thick trebles were there from the first pluck, and that's something I really wanted from this guitar. It's a lively thing, lightweight and really resonant. My other guitars are pretty heavy so I'm enjoying the comfort that this instrument provides. Again, I'll go into more details on sonics once I'm a bit more dialed in with my playing, and once I'm more accustomed to the nuances of what I'm hearing. I will say this however... Ryan Gerber makes fantastic guitars and I'm thrilled to finally have one in my hands!

For now here are a few photos, some of the finished guitar on Ryan's bench and a one of it in my new home basking in the afternoon sun over New York Harbor.

More soon!

Matt

Many congratulations. That is just beautiful. I think I saw a video of Ryan playing it. If so, it sounds incredible too!
