Not sure what your budget is but if you can stretch it a little a Martin GPC-16E Rosewood would make a great choice.

I looked at the GPC-11e, it is at the top of my range but still a viable option. The Canadian used market is really bad right now, reverb/where I am geographically. I usually buy all my guitars used, but the deals just are not there. All that to say a used low end Martin was my first thought. With import and shipping from the US i'd be paying new prices so I haven't even been looking south.

Yeah it's up there. This is the problem with looking this early. I'm at least a month out from purchasing so the list of viable options just keeps growing (my reverb wishlist could fill a retail store, and includes almost all of the recommendations here so far). When push comes to shove, the Seagull performer CH, or Seagull Maritime CH are likely candidates alongside the Yamaha AC3...

I'm with you on the reverb list and, I'm wanting an Art & Luthrie Legacy- Canada has bunch of em- shipping fees are killing the want to.

At your price point, you should check out Breedlove guitars. They punch way above their weight!

It would help if you could tell us what kind of preference you have in nut width, string spacing, or type of neck. Any preference in wood?

Have you considered a Crafter Grand Auditorium model? I won a twin bird anniversary 32nd model and it's a great guitar. Close to dread size but with a cutaway.

Thanks for all the recommendations all. I went to the store and played a whole bunch of stuff (even a Taylor 214 that almost made me reconsider), but I did what I often do... A complete 180 in the store. I ended up buying a Gibson J15 Walnut Burst. Not the most comfortable couch guitar, but I needed a good dread too! NGD thread incoming.

Marty1,

A J15 is a fine instrument. Enjoy.

If you are looking for another guitar in that range,

Second that opinion on series 100 Taylors, especially a Grand Auditorium model.

Also check out the new Epiphone "Inspired by Gibson" models too for a nice economical solid wood instrument in that price range. J-200, J-45, and Hummingird. I have the J-200 from that series.

The inspired by Gibson line is really nice. If I encounter a used hummingbird in the future, I'll likely pick it up. Those MIM Taylors are really impressive. I was looking at the AD27 (which was nice), but there was a 214 DLX that almost came home with me for nearly a grand less (CAD) than my J15.... It was cosmetically flawless and had an angelic sound. I was looking for an all-rounder/bluesy/rock strummer type sound, but the Taylor was by no means a lesser guitar. I would have happily brought both home.
