"Falling leaves" 000 Build
Hi,
One of my current builds called "Falling leaves" its a 000 size features all New Zealand natives Kauri Top, Ancient Kauri Back & Sides, Matai neck puriri fretboard & bridge, and as the customer specified, a whole lot of paua shell inlaying. look forward to any comments or questions. The kauri top is very youthful (800yr old) in comparison to the Ancient Kauri which if you believe in carbon dating is 50,000yrs+ I tried counting the grain lines and got 52 per inch this gives you an idea how old and compressed this timber is.
Its the 5th and hopefully last life for this Kauri, its been obviously a tree then a timber mill, flooring, a beam and now a guitar top. some more photos of the top and back taking shape. Cheers, Christian

Vacuum clamps and double-X bracing? Any Charles Fox influence?

Hi,
Thanks for the praise of the inlays, I took alot of work drawing thm up with the customer, when you see the fretboard it will all become clearer, not sure the leaves are "falling" but I did my best. I managed to steer away from the paua purfling, which I think would have been a bit of a paua overkill on this particular guitar, so we are going for a green/ancient kauri/green veneer combo. which will set the ancient kauri off nicely. yip I know who Charles Fox is, can't remember if I borrowed the vacuum clamp idea from him, but I certainly use the Fox bender...what a very clever man !!!! the double X is not specifically from anyone, I think we all play around with bracing and its not by mistake we end up with similar designs, the timbers I use can pose some unique challenges and interesting solutions. re: BTW, if you have a website, I believe the forum encourages you to include a link in your signature. Hi,
So thats the top and back completed, now onto the sides, pretty straight forward bend thanks to the Fox bender, glued in solid kauri linings,reinforcements, laminated head, tail block, and then the back fitted and glued on. Cheers, Christian.

How long do you keep the sides in the bender prior to removal? Hi Jerry, I switch off the heat and let them cool for about an hour before transferring them straight to the mold. Cheers, Christian.

Hi,
Thanks Steve for the praise. The next sequence is the routing out of the soundport, I didn't take of a photo of it but the soundport has a green and ancient kauri veneer laminate. Next is the one two skip a few processes of the neck. The neck is made from Matai (black pine) which is a fantastic native, one of its primary uses has been for flooring due its hardness, strength and high dimensional stability, recycled flooring also happens to be the the source of my supply.
