Question DVD Recorders

Who owns one of these? Can you share some information as to what I should look for when purchasing one?

Thanks.

Philips and Panasonic are the major players in the home market.

Philips uses DVD+R/RW and Panasonic DVD-R/RW

FORMAT WARS! yet again

I picked up open box units one of each (BOTH for about the price of either one new) and there are things I like about each.

I particularly like the DVD+RW of the Philips, but the Panasonic arguably has a slight picture and sound edge IMO.

Be careful buying blank discs in the stores. They can be WAY overpriced. Check out the net.

You WILL want to dub all your tapes and throw away your VCRs!

Joe,

Which format is the most compatible with players on the market? We bought a Sanyo about six months ago and we would be making copies for relatives, etc., who have all different kinds of brands of players.

Thanks.

Joe - Merry Christmas to you!

Thanks, Rob! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Compatibility? Philips CLAIMS that DVD+R is the more compatible format.

This article is written from a PC drive standpoint, but you get the idea.

For burning DVDs on your computer, Sony makes a model called a DRU-500A that will burn both + and - DVDs -- it's the only one that will do both.

My understanding is that most of the DVD players sold today will READ both + and -.

Older DVD players read the - technology which I understand is being overtaken by the + technology.

Go online to PC World and they have some good articles on the DVD format wars.

Good Luck,
Gibby

Stick with the DVD RW standard. It offers the best compatability.
Avoid the DVD +RW standard.

Hi Mark, I've found the opposite to be true and like the DVD+R/RW best so far. Hmmmm???

But I am referring to standalone DVD video recorders, not computer drives.
