Hi Blueser, thanks for asking and congrats on your new FS800.

I've had my Yamaha now for 7 months, been playing guitar a total of 15 months. I really do like this guitar, especially since I went and had it professionally setup. I also changed the stock Yamaha strings (which I did in fact like) to Martin 80/20 lights. I like these strings as well. I play just about everyday, either practicing specific songs or just noodling around. I've certainly gotten better, but I'm still ways off from being remotely considered an intermediate player. I play mostly worship music from our church, but I'm also learning some stuff from my youth back in the 70s. I'm enjoying the journey very much.

I am obviously a bit late to this thread but a belated welcome to AGF, Don. The Yamaha was a good choice. That is a good guitar and hard to beat at that price point. Many more expensive models don't sound as good as your FG800.

A suggestion on the Jameson; take a piece of steel wool and rub down the neck to take the poly off. You will end up with a satin finish that is not so sticky. Fine sandpaper will work too. It doesn't take much, so keep testing it until it feels right to you. And happy playing, learning and obsessing!

Thanks for this suggestion Stead. To be honest though, I rarely play the Jameson anymore. The 800 just sounds so much better. Frankly, the Jameson sounds like a toy to me. At some point I will probably get rid of it.

You could always make it a piece of wall art in your office or rec room.

Congrats and welcome. I too have the FG800, got mine in the Vintage tine. I swear it sounds as good as any FG180 Nippon Gakki or Twain FG160 I have ever had. I always said my old FG160 Tan label beat out my FG180. Back to the FG800, killer guitar and not a lot invested. I almost bought a K. Yairi and darn if my 800 sounded better to me. She packs a punch and has been on a Tonerite for close to 10 months straight.

Congrats! I just bought my FG800 today from GC(price match and gave me the extras from the other deal) and could not be happier. I recently sold a Taylor 114e and bought this guitar to replace it and I'm blown away by this thing. Beats the 114e in any level, enjoy!

Got the same guitar a few weeks ago. Plays great. Just wish I knew which strings it had, for sure. Website said it could be D'addario exp11 or FS50BT.

First off, congrats on your guitar. I think they're a pretty good bargain. I sure do love mine.

So, which website were you looking at? The FG800 comes with Yamaha FG12 80/20 lights from the factory. I liked 'em, but when I finally did a change I went with Martin 80/20 lights. No reason really. But, I think they sound good. Anyway, the FG12 lights can be purchased from Kraftmusic.com.

The FG800 sound really really good with a set of EXP17 mediums. Made mine sound louder, more sustain and bass, hands down so far the best for me.

I may have to try those out in the future. Thanks for sharing this.

I also called Yamaha to find out about the strings and he confirmed the above. He also said I could not get the strings that came on it if they were the Yamaha strings. Weird, but that's what he said. He even left a message on my VM. Something doesn't sound right to me.

If mine are the FG12s, then I like them..... Cheap too.... Just trying to confirm.
