Building an electric for the acoustic player
So I’m starting a new Tele-Style build that (hopefully) appeals to acoustic players looking for an electric. Pics below are of the guitar I built for my dad a few years back (his 50th anniversary- thus all the gold. Even gold evo frets lol). I built that one one with a wide neck (1-3/4” nut) because dad is an acoustic player and he loves it. Very comfortable to play.
The new build I’m starting will have nods to our acoustic heritage with custom herringbone Purfling and vintage cream binding, Adirondack Spruce Cap, mohoagany back and sides. I’d love input from you guys. Its impossible to appeal to all taste but I’m planning on modeling loosely after my dad’s guitar (spec-wise). I’m in the process of registering the name and logo for my future builds with the patent & trademark office so this one is being built as a ‘prototype’ but I intend to build 5-6 a year after this one with the new headstock design and logo included. Specs I’m considering are based on my build below. Let me know your thoughts: T-Style Electric Scale 25.5” Neck: Nut Width: 1-3/4” Nut Material: Graphtech Tusq XL Neck profile: Vintage C - not too thin not to thick Neck Material. Mahogany (optional 3A figured maple). Single Truss Rod (optional double) Fret board: Rosewood Frets: medium jumbo / stainless steel Neck finish: oil Headstock finish: Nitro (optional oil or poly) Tuners: Sperzel or Shaller customs Body/ Controls: Body: Mahogany with Adirondack Spruce Cap (3A Figured maple optional) Herringbone Binding/ Vintage Cream Binding Pickups: Fender Custom Shop ‘51 Nocasters (optional Lollar Vintage T neck/ Blade Steel bridge with matching tortoise shell cover). Controls: Reverse / CTS 250K vintage taper/ solid shaft pots, 3 way switch & vintage capacitors, treble bleed. Bridge: Fender genuine/ vintage 3 roll Neck plate custom Any input on this new build would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! w |

Very nice! Just put 12 gauge strings on it and you'll be right at home

Lol, sorry, I’m so used to writing “back and sides” discussing acoustics I said it here. I’m not building a hollow body but, maybe I should?

The specs should appeal to many acoustic players for sure, and that is one beautiful instrument. You should be proud, and I'll bet your dad loves it!

First off, love your design! I'm curious about your "patent and trademark" efforts, though. The reason I mention it is that one of the builders on Talkbass started marketing a design close to a standard Telecaster and immediately received a cease and desist notification from Fender's legal services. He was unaware that they vigorously defend their body and headstock profiles, particularly for Telecaster and Stratocaster designs. Just a thought to try and save you a lot of extra effort. In his case he re-designed both the body and headstock profiles to not be identifiable as the Fender shapes. |

I tried numerous Teles over the years. I just returned a ‘68 Pink Paisley to the sister of a buddy who passed away. I had it here for 2 years and played it regularly. I also played this guitar as a kid back in the 70s. I have also owned several nice Teles over the years including Custom Shop models. I just cannot get the Tele sound I have in my head to come out of an amp. I finally realized that the raunchy Stones Tele sounds in my head were done on some 70s Teles with a HB in the neck. At this point I would possibly consider a custom build with P90s. If I get another Tele, I want it to be snarly.

Right, so I’m totally redesigning the headstock, not radically (and the body slightly). The prototype I’m working on will be based closer to the standard Tele design and will work out more of the acoustic aesthetic I’m trying to achieve. |

Wow - that’s really nice. Is the body weight relieved at all? What did it end up weighing? I like the pickguard but I think a tooled leather one would also look good here. Great looking work.

Thanks. To be honest I don’t remember the exact weight but is was over 7-1/2 lbs. I think the channel routes were offset by the locking tuners, wider thicker neck and bridge cover plate. It’s got a heft to it no doubt. When you pick it up if feels substantial, not bad but like the old silvertones. (I’ve got the weight written down in my build notes but I’m stuck to this couch due to shoulder surgery. Shoulder surgery by the way, ain’t for sissies! lol!) |

I love hollow-bodies, so maybe you should build one because that is sure a solid-body I'd love to try. Simple, stunning visually. Nice!
