RP recently posted a great thread on signing guitars. Let's do a poll and get a count. Yes or no....

I would rather quit playing entirely than have some idiot deface a multi-thousand dollar instrument with a marker

Last year there was a Bourgeois 000 or 00 12 used at Guitar Center for a decent price, but it had a bunch of signatures on the top of a band I'd never heard of... I couldn't fathom why anybody would have thought that was a good idea.

If they want to sign something to hang on the wall, a laminate Epiphone will do just fine.

Thank you for starting this thread. It wasn't my intent to find out who was opposed to signatures on guitars; there are many, and I'm one of them. I really just wanted to see IF someone was to sign a guitar, who would you want it to be...

Definite no.

Slightly off-topic - I once wandered into the local GC and there was a beautiful Gibson Les Paul Standard in Mojave hanging on the wall.. beautiful except for the ink imprint of a receipt that somehow got transferred onto about 2-3" along the neck.

Their techs refused to even try to repair it. I brought it home (with a generous discount) and in about 10 minutes got it off 100% with an isopropyl wipe.

IF I had a piece of junk beater guitar I would let someone like Jimmy Page sign it so then it might be worth something

If I had one of those cheap Alvarez Grateful Dead design models, and Jerry Garcia came back and offered to sign it for me, I’d let him. Short of that, nope...

I guess it would depend on who signs it. A buddy of mine bought one from a batch that Tommy Emmanuel was literally selling out of the trunk of his car (at some grownups guitar sleepaway camp in Ohio). He seems pretty pleased with the purchase, and the signature's huge and right there on the upper bout so the guitar's a bit of a conversation piece. And with Tommy, I think it's pretty safe to assume that his fame won't become notoriety when he marries his 14-year-old cousin.

I'd let Phil sign it.

I don't know. Maybe if it was someone who I really connected to through their music, but anybody I could think of would have to come back from the dead. Johnny Cash, Guy Clark, John Prine...etc, etc, etc...

I'm breaking out in a cold sweat at the thought. Maybe, just maybe, if Mark Knopfler was to give me one of his Sobells and insisted on signing it first...but even then I'd ask for it to be somewhere discreet!

Default I have one guitar reserved for signatures

My Baby Taylor (which isn't a particularly fine guitar) is the guitar I use to collect signatures. I've got signatures from some of my favorites including:
James Burton, Tommy Emmanuel, Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Darrell Scott, Chris Smither, Verlon Thompson, Eric Taylor, Robert Earl Keen, Lloyd Maines, and a whole bunch more.

It's not a guitar that I will ever likely play and it's worth more to me as a signature collector than a musical instrument. I have no regrets about using it this way.
