1917
... what an amazing film...not what I expected based on the trailers...very little battle footage....intense drama...extraordinary acting and cinematography....definitely gets my vote for a whole boatload of awards...

Sounds cool. I want to check it out sometime. Thanks.
By the way, you really use ellipses.

Saw it last week with my son - super intense - I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and there was very little combat scenes....it was like a moving action psychological thriller.
We both loved it (and he is a History major)

Looking forward to this. And glad it doesn't have a lot of battle footage, as that would have turned me off.

I saw it yesterday in an IMAX theater and very much like it. However, I was surprised to see a jiggling effect when the camera would pan across the horizon and some seems lacking depth of field, which wouldn’t have been a problem in a conventional theater were annoying on an IMAX screen. As an example, the trench scenes were only in focus in the very center of the screen leaving a large expanse of blurriness.

But I find iMax to be less comfortable to watch - like I always feel something is out of focus or I can't keep track of it in the periphery.

My daughter went with a group of friends. They all loved it but one young man said "yeah it was good but I didn't like the ending." To which my daughter replied "you know that it was a true story, right?"
"wait...what?"

It's an intoxicating cinematic event. A film that pulls you in from the beginning and dials up the the intensity as the film evolves keeping you connected. Excellent cinematography keeps your eyes engaged and your brain intrigued. However, it is not a documented "event". It's a story the director, Sam Mendez', grandfather relayed to him as a child. Here's an excerpt from a story that jives with all I've read on the film. It is well deserving of the attention and award nominations it is receiving.
"1917 is something of a true story, looselybased on a tale the director's grandfather - Alfred H. Mendes, who served with the British Army during the First World War - told him as a child." "The story of 1917 was inspired not only by my own family history, but also by many others," |

I saw a brief clip on the making of this film - if I remember correctly they used a new, smaller camera mount system that allowed them to move seamlessly with the actors in relatively confined spaces.
Saw the film today and the sets, lighting and cinematography is simply stunning.

When you see the film you realize that this freedom to move 360 degrees around the actors also means the set has to extend all around them too!
