Better cropped pic of the neck bolts. John's usual on the bottom. New smaller and lighter on top. The gripping Nut will embed in the sliding Rosewood bar.
Hope this makes sense!

Ya know brother Paul, this guitar reminds me of some of those very cool motor cars I grew up around that had all the stuff...3/4 camshaft, trip 4 brl hollies, racing manifolds, limited slip differentials and racing slicks to top it off. This guitar of yours has it all... a veritable technologically advanced machine with just about every accessory known to man in one instrument.

VERY COOL! I'll be interested to hear your "take" on it all.

Hey Mike. Judging by my other JK Custom builds this will be a complete MONSTER. It should almost float away yet sound HEAVY !

I decided to skip getting a Fan Fret since I play so much slide, and it would just be too difficult to line up the slide. Hard enough to get slide in tune as it is! Hahaha

And I know you have another coming too! Woohoo, we are receiving bench mates.

Plus you know who is getting one too!

Let's RAWK

Paul

Pics from JK today. 20190907_142924.jpg.
Sliding adjustable neck widget in place. New lighter SS bolts and nuts in the Walnut sliding bar. Not using Rosewood as it has a greater tendency to crack.

This from John yesterday: "It may not look like much, but the neck now attaches with a sliding, internal block. Smaller diameter bolts lighter self locking nuts, and it does line up side to side and up and down. You can see in one picture the brace where the bridge will be. The neck without fingerboard should line up with the top without a bridge, assuming the fingerboard and the bridge are about the same thickness, and this it does nicely.

I'm on to rosettes.
And, that channel where the d tube rests can now be extended into the heel tang."

20190907_142905.jpg.
Outside of neck heel showing the recessed holes for the bolts. There will be another in the Fretboard around the 13th fret, for the bolt to raise and lower the neck. John has done a LOT of thinking on this system and I believe it is very elegant and classy!

20190907_142832.jpg.
Neck routed for Carbon Fiber D Tube

20190907_142841.jpg

20190907_142901.jpg.
John made a single brace using the same slight curve as the top to make sure the neck is lining up correctly.
It is!
Kind of a catch 22. You can't join the top to the box until the neck angle is correct, but you can't get the angle correct until the top is in place. John, please correct me if I am wrong here.

20190907_163205.jpg.
Last for today, the rosette. I Like Abalone. When I was a young man I lived on the bluff in Solana Beach, North San Diego County. For 12 years I had 3 piles of abalone shells, each about the size of a VW bug in my yard. Left over thousands of years by indigenous folks, I figure.
I surfed every day and sang and played drums in dance bands. What a life!
Whee...

Paul you are right about the catch 22. I really did not want to close the box until I had the neck attachment/adjustment working smoothly and accurately. But to be accurate the top needed to be on. The temporary brace did the trick.
I polished up those inside nuts and epoxied them in place so I think they will look good and work well

Smile Nuts and bolts...

Since you can see in the sound port so easily I guess it is good the nuts are nice and shiny...

And I am very happy they only weigh half as much as the ones they are "replacing". My goal on this is to have it float away if I let it go. Hahaha

Seriously, each of our builds has gotten lighter, and it really makes a difference at my gigs! Especially the ones where I go room to room for the shut-ins.
I used to need to take a chair with me, but have found I can stand much longer and much easier with the OVERLORD. I can sit occasionally when there is a chair in one of the rooms and that is enough. Much easier to get right next to folks, too. They really tend to brighten up when you get "up in their grill"

Your instruments are doing good work! And they get MANY compliments, too!

Play on gang

Paul

Paul, congratulations on your new JK. I understand your loyalty. I sat with my JK 000 cedar/pau santo for two hours last night, completely enchanted. Very sensitive, beautiful instrument.

I am very interested to hear how the Spanish Cedar turns out...I might have to put one on my wish list!

Smile Thanks Jamiejoon...

Judging by past results, it will be a KEEPER, for sure.

My goal musically has always been to sound like ME, and not anyone else.
John's guitars work better for what I do than anything I have ever played, let alone owned! And I have gone through a LOT of instruments by a lot of high end makers. An embarrassing list, and too long to even remember. Sigh

(Still far from every builder! Or even most... I do not believe there is time or money enough to experience ALL the fantastic instruments in the world!). Thank You Luthiers ALL. You folks make the world a better and more musical place!!!

And, John's willingness to experiment and the amount of THINKING going into some of these comfort and tone mods is quite something, and I am most grateful!

This new sliding neck adjustment system is a real brain teaser. John said his wife came in the shop the other day and asked him, "why are you just looking at that guitar?" He was thinking it through...

Off to sing and play the OVERLORD for the ill and infirm today, as usual.

Cheers

Paul

Smile Interesting compliment today

This morning I played at one of my rather noisy recurring monthly Healthcare facility gigs. Probably 25 folks in the room, and a bunch of stuff going on. It went well as usual and fun was had by the folks who were awake! Hahah

As I was leaving a gentleman who's room was across the hall came to his door and asked what kind of guitar I was playing. He said it sounded great and he could hear it well in his room. He wondered what kind of amplifier I was using!!! When I told him it was not amplified at all he was really surprised and asked all about it and John, which slowed down my exit considerably.

This kind of thing occurs often with John's Round Peaks. Think oversized 12 fret Slope Dread with a slightly pinched waist. (Or a Taylor GS with a flatter butt)
But it is not so much the size, as the construction, I figure. It also happened often with John's #99 which is a 12 fret 000 cutaway.

Link to build thread for my latest JK, "The OVERLORD":

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=491678. This is the one I was playing this morning.

Woohoo. The next will be even FATTER.

Cheers

Paul

Nice shiny bolts

20190909_185150.jpg
Neck received CF D Tube. This from John: "the CF is slightly offset because the lining of the cutaway is impinging on the symmetry of the entire neck system. I even had to offset the bolts a little to the right because the wood slide internal to the neck had to be offset just a hair for everything to fit. There really is a lot going on."

Top bracing in progress..

Go John, Go

Today's pics from John

20190912_160442.jpg
Box ready for sound port. This has a LOT of reinforcement for the BIG BEVELS. I am glad it is all Spanish Cedar, as that is as light of wood as one can use for this job, I believe.

20190912_160515.jpg
Top ready for brace carving.

Cheers

Smile Thanks!

Hey Nemoman and Tom Bsox

Thanks for coming along for the ride and the nice words! I know you would both enjoy this one a LOT! Tom, I don't want much, I want it ALL! Hahahahaha

BTW, John reports the bridge plate is Padouk, and says he uses it on all his instruments. Interesting!

Life is GREAT! Have FUN

John reports the braces are carved, although he usually does more voicing once the top joins the box. And often after it has been strung up for a while, too! Woohoo
