It had blue tape all over the fretboard and no frets or strings; very difficult to play!

Binding time!
Having a mitrey fun time: Tom says: "Gluing in the cutaway binding. I’m always amazed how binding completely changes the look of a guitar. Especially on larger instruments, the soundhole and rosette can look lost or misplaced somehow. The binding acts to frame the instrument and bring everything into perspective. Once I’ve glued everything in place, I’ll carefully pare down the mitred corners flush with the soundboard to ensure the joint is perfectly closed and seated correctly." Old mountain bike inner tubes to the rescue: Tom says: "The cutaway is always a little tricky because of all the compound curves resulting from the tapering sides, the 15’ dome in the back and the Manzer body wedge. Trying to bend something flat and straight into something that’s not requires a few tricks. 1)Thin out the binding strip and back with a strip of black dyed 0.010” veneer during glue up. 2)A method I learned from Ervin, bend a cutaway sized piece of ebony and cut from this binding strips which conform to the aforementioned curves. 3) a method picked up from Lars @rasmussenguitars, split the cutaway binding strip into two and instal as smaller sections, when the glue cures and scraped flush, the join becomes invisible." Tom Sands has used all three; Doerr has a fourth method: "The method I use is before you bend the actual side wood for the cutaway pre shape the curve of where the binding will sit. Then tape the straight binding material to that curve of the cutaway piece. Go and bend the cutaway piece and when finished your binding will be bent to that curve. Hope that makes sense. It works great every time and super easy." Is this the lutherie equivalent of an oenophile's raised pinkie when raising a glass...?

Time for a butt wedge/end graft/arse patch...
We spent a while talking and thinking about the design. We settled on something that would work with functional requirements (an endpin jack had to go in somewhere), tied in aesthetically with the rest of the guitar (with the etched copper echoing the rosette and the radial pattern linking up with the fanned frets), and also links in with my Kostal MD endgraft. The MD, together with my more recently acquired Wingert, are my main guitars. The are quite a few visual tie ins between the MD and the L baritone, which will make them a great pair! Think Tom and Daisy might have splashed out on a new wide angle lens...?

Bevelicious
As I mentioned earlier, I marked out my preferred bevel positions and sizes on my Kostal MD using blue painters' tape and sent photos to Tom to use as a reference. We went back and forth a bit on the pencil drawings to ensure it all worked functionally and aesthetically, considering things like the size, position, angle and termination. Here's here's the arm rest being made.. From Tom: "Don’t chuck out your scalpel blades! Here I’m getting to work installing the arm bevel starting (more or less) with the purfling. Scalpel blades make great mini clamps! What’s cool is that as you push them in, the clamping pressure increases! Don’t go overboard mind, one can easily damage the delicate purfling."

As I'm middle-aged, a beer gut/belly bevel also seemed fitting...
The tool Tom is using here is a beautiful gramil cutter made for him by Mark Gaiero (instagram handle @gaieroguitars) when they apprenticed together at Ervin Somogyi’s shop. As Tom says: "Routing for the rib bevel. First time doing this, step one complete, nobody died." Routing to create the rib comfort bevel on the guitar back. Tom says: "I can’t tell you how nerve wracking this was. Fortunately we’re all good. Life made 100 times easier with a brand new chamfer bit from @radiantools." I think Tom just found everyone's lost picks... In the luthier's words: "I’ve absolutely loved creating this rib comfort bevel, it’s been such a challenge and has required new jigs and fixtures to execute cleanly and safely. Lots of work but really worth the effort. Here I’m tidying everything up with one of my favourite tools, a Japanese carving rasp, before finally applying the veneer overlay to finish off the job. This picture gives a little bit more of a sense of how the bevel is constructed." And here a short vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGeMax-yUAE

Bevels finished - all cleaned up and lookin’ good... So much so that neither Tom, Daisy nor I could get enough photos of them!
Tom jokingly referred to the guitar as Beverly. I’m not in the habit of naming my guitars, but so far, it seems to have stuck!

That’s interesting: I’d thought the bevel face was ebony but Tom’s pics suggest it’s dyed to match the binding?

For those not in the know (I know you’re clued up Steve!), you can find out more about RockLite in Tom’s blog here: http://www.tomsandsguitars.com/blog/...herie-industry and in this podcast interview with Tom, Daisy and Steve Keys: https://anchor.fm/tomsandsguitars/ep...ndustry-e30ned TL;DR (which could kinda be the subtitle of this thread ? Here's the skinny from Tom: “It is actually made of real wood; specifically, a combination of European Eucalptus and North American Tulipwood and not to be confused with a paper based product bearing a similar name. It’s not a fibreboard; it has a structural integrity that allows you to bend it, plane it and work it like wood, with straight grain. It really is a joy to work with and to the untrained eye, almost indistinguishable from African or Indian ebonies.”

Beverly sounds like a good name under the circumstances. My baritone is called Barry (which begs the question, should a standard gutar be called Stan?)
