I almost bought a J15 a couple of years ago. One of the reasons I didn't was because the slots were very inconsistent across the nut.

My other concern is that stores would not always make a correct set up...
Setups are a very personal thing. I've sent guitars back that come back playing too low. Some techs think that everybody wants a guitar to play as low as possible. Not the case. Factory setup is not set up. They basically just put the strings on.

Right. A little care at the end of the assembly line with a set up tech offers a chance for the consumer to more accurately assess a particular guitar. If it’s a matter of purchasing a guitar that doesn’t stay in tune well, then taking it in for a set up (which I do for every guitar anyway), then finding out that nut slot work didn’t solve all of the problem of tuning stability, as mentioned previously, one can end up with a less than stellar example.

I love Gibson anyway but haven’t had this problem with Martins in shop.

I don't know what to tell you.
Same with my J185 and most if/ not all Gibson’s from Montana that i have ever owned.

But Gibson and there nuts really let me down. Am I to picky? This is an easy fix for me (that played for a long time), but if i was fairly new to guitars and bought any of them I would have a guitar that went out of tune as soon as I touched the G or B string.

I have a hard time believing that the thousands of guitars that Gibson produces are incapable of holding intonation, based on the tiny sample presented here.

a) It's a brand-new guitar. Often tight nut slots open up as the guitar is played, tuned, and re-strung.
b) The stock strings might not be the gauge or the type that the end user will ultimately install, so the nut on any guitar might have to be adjusted anyway.
c) The idea that the guitar would go "out of tune as soon as I touched the G or B string" is a vast overstatement, especially since the only issue mentioned is pinging from the nut.

Yes - I had a J45 and a L00 - both had the "Pingy" sitar sounds on the B and E strings and it turned out it was the nut on both. It developed AFTER I played and bought the guitars. I'm afraid to purchase another Gibson acoustic because of it.

I have a few upper Epiphones masterbilts that dont have that problem.

That's an easy fix. I'm sorry, but I don't get it.

Never had a problem with Gibson nuts on any of the stores I've been. Perhaps you have a horrible store, not a horrible nut.

Yes - it was - but graphite was not the fix. Adjusting the nut slot did not work either. Had to replace the nut on both guitars.

I was just agreeing wityh the OP that Gibson's nuts do have issues and when I go in to buy a guitar I want the guitar to be ready to play - not need surgery.

:-)

I understand what you want. We'll would all like that.
It's unfortunate you had this experience but these nut issues are just not exclusive to nor are they chronic with Gibson guitars. Ther are many posts on here to testify to that including mine. This issue happened to you and the OP and perhaps others.
You are soured on Gibson. So be it.

Since the OP is surprised that 9 of 10 guitars were out of tune, then I’m not surprised that he may have traced this down to “Gibson horrible nuts” being part of the problem.
Along with exposing the out of control, out of tune problem, he deserves a vote of thanks for revealing his findings.

Your observations may indicate this is somewhat of a 'buyer-beware' shop. As you observe, maybe not the best place for a beginner needing to rely on a good setup from them. For someone who knows guitars OTOH, tuning and a little nut work shouldn't be too much of an obstacle. We'd have a better idea if you had actual experience buying from them.
Regarding Gibson QA/AC, I think your very small sample combined with a much larger sample here and elsewhere on the web don't seem to indicate a problem.
