I joined a working country band in the early 90s knowing nothing about Country. Nada. Zip. Nothing. But I learned forty songs in two weeks and hit the stage with them. I ultimately came to like the genre as it was presented at the time, Toby Keith, Martina McBride, the Judds . . . just great stuff. And you could throw a dart at the Brooks and Dunn catalog and hit a good song. Perusing the releases of any of those artists should yield some good results.

There were lots of good Alabama songs from that time period:

"Tennessee River"
"Old Flame"
"Feels So Right"
"Love in the First Degree"
"Take Me Down"
"Dixieland Delight"
"The Closer You Get"
"Song of the South"

(I don't want this to turn into a country/purist discussion. Please? I just want some fun country songs to play.)

Thanks!
I love "Driving My Life Away" and "I Love A Rainy Night", two great Eddie Rabbitt songs...

My favorites are probably "Elvira" from the Oak Ridge Boys, "I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World" and "Smokey Mountain Rain" from Ronnie Milsap, "The Gambler," "Islands In The Stream" (which was written by my Bee Gees!) and "Coward Of The County" from Kenny Rogers, "All The Gold" from the Gatlin Brothers, "Devil Went Down To Georgia" by Charlie Daniels Band, most John Denver stuff, "Old Flame" by Alabama... Just a few off the top of my head right now. Listened to a lot of late 70s/early 80s country growing up.

Thanks for that. I had never heard of this song. I remember seeing him long ago on Heart to Heart on RFD TV with Stan Hitchcock. I checked out the song and downloaded it and the album to my i-tunes. Will give the entire album a listen in the car the next couple of days.

You've got to hear ''Road'' from the ''#2 Fried Chicken'' album.

In fact, you've got to hear that whole album!!

It's not exactly country, but how about something off "Slow Turning" by John Hiatt? The title track, "Tennessee Plates", or maybe "Drive South"?

Default What are your favorite 80s country songs and hooks?

Yep I played in a country band in the late 1980s 1990s and loved the lifestyle and sounds of CMTV and a smoking Tele I would include any of the following
Alan Jackson
Mary C Carpenter
Kathy Mattia
Brooks and Dunn
Vince Gill
George Strait
Garth Brooks
Keith Urban

The list goes on ( thankfully) as long as they could line dance . Really miss those days

Good luck

Drive South is one of my favorite songs recorded by one of the great singers of our generation, Suzy Bogguss. I believe You Tube also shows Suzy and John doing the song together once.
