Default Halcyon/Tinker Thread - Part 2

The first one blasted right past the 300 post limit, so I figured there'd be some interest in a new one. Here is the link to the previous one with many photos and builds and lots of good information from Ed.

http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=378406

I am waiting on my first Halcyon, a Walnut/Lutz NL-00 with ebony bridge and fretboard, which I hope to receive sometime in the spring.

I've quoted the first post from that thread here:

Any Halcyon owners want to share their builds, pictures, stories of search, stories of ownership, in the hopes that it gets Ed's name more out there? He seems like a good dude that makes great products, and ridiculous prices. The kind of guy you hope does well. And....go!

Update: Here are some helpful links for anyone saying Halcy-what?

There are a handful of build threads on AGF, and several posts from Bluedog Guitars showing the completed builds. I tried linking them, but it wouldn't work. They are there, and very much worth investigating. I would go to the search function on the forum and simply search for Halcyon.

I hope some folks find this helpful

I am getting closer to the anticipation stage. I think the last number I saw was 208 and I'm 214.

Still loving mine!

Been playing the tele lately but pulled the Halcyon's out the other day and the tele has been cooling its heels in its case since. Still amazes me how great these things sound.

Hi, I'm in Adelaide, Australia. I've just received my Lutz/Walnut Halcyon NL-00 and thought I'd share some quick comments I've just sent to Ed. Here're some excerpts:

"I’m very pleased with the instrument. First thing I noted of course was its light weight and the truly excellent workmanship - congratulations! It’s also very, very playable - slim neck, beautifully set up and overall, an excellent size for finger style playing. Great with a flat pick as well - it responds very well indeed - almost Macaferri-like!

The sound is intriguing. It’s very loud, quite balanced and strong while also being very articulate with no sense of boominess, ‘flabbiness' or confused resonances. I guess maybe a combination of the body depth and the walnut b&s? The mid-range in particular - the D and G strings have very effective voices which I’m pleased with - I’ve often found the G string on small guitars to be somewhat ‘flat’ and difficult to activate with fingers alone!

The treble strings are perhaps those I find most interesting. The fundamental notes are strong, full and ’sparkly’. I have a rosewood/Euro-spruce Brook Lyn (12 fret, 00 size) that has a similar articulate, strong and balanced voice but it’s trebles are softer with a sort of darker ‘bloom’. The NL-00 has that same harmonic ‘bloom’ surrounding the fundamental frequency but it seems much brighter. I reckon I’ll learn to do much more with it as I adapt (and improve) my playing to suit...
So a big plus++ from me down under! Many, many thanks."

Note that I especially asked Ed to try and build me something that retained a strong range of sounds for finger style playing with lots of 'woodiness' a la an old J-50 I once played. Just trying to translate sonic dreams I know - but I think he's succeeded. The bracing is non-scalloped - but I have no real idea what contribution that may or may not have made to the outcome. Overall the sound is strong, light, airy, very resonant, great sustain, not dark or muffled in any way. Heaps of 'brightness' to play with - hence my Maccaferri comment (I know - I should have said 'Selmer' but you know what I mean...). I also have other '00' sized guitars by Larrivee, Martin, Thompson and Brook. I think that now I have this Halcyon I'll be saying 'goodbye' to most of them! I've spent the last 50 years trying to learn to play like Bert Jansch - maybe now I can get a bit closer to my goal!
Sam.

Thanks for that review. I am eagerly awaiting word from Ed that mine is underway, as I expect it will be soon.

Great review Sam. I'm looking forward to seeing the videos that Halcyon has in the works.
