Default 'Practice Neck' - useful?

Hi all,

I've seen 'practice necks' for sale; its a 'practice guitar' that consists of the first 9 frets of the neck and includes a headstock, except that you "hold" the headstock.

Looks like it might be useful to take to work, for example, and practice fingering chords at my desk during lunch or breaks.

Just curious if anyone's tried one?

Thanks

I'd rather have a whole guitar I think.

Maybe if you spend a lot of time on airplanes.

My practice neck has a Voyage-Air body hooked to the other end of it.

I don't practice on odd sized devices, nor without sound accompanying.

I just don't see this product emulating real world fretting situations. The fretting hand does not always hold or grip the neck but moves freely with many different tension factors depending on chord movements, hammers on and off, sliding, bending, etc. And what of picking and strumming patterns? The act of co-ordinating fretting and picking hands is not addressed with this device. I think the money is better spent elsewhare.

I agree with lj, I don't see a lot of point in this without sound. It's merely a fret-hand exerciser, and if you're going to spend that much, why not spend a little more on something like this (half the price of the Martin backpacker):

Given that you're in a situation where you can't have a full-size guitar, I'd be less embarrassed to pull that out than one of those dumb practice necks. At least you could actually play something on it.

Mine makes a darn pretty wall ornament. As a practice tool its worse than useless.

Heck, even a ukulele would be a better option.

Thanks for your opinions. I'm guessing they're not selling many of these...
