What'd know playing the D like James Taylor...
makes it easier to play Carolina in my Mind!
Gosh I never would have guessed. Here if you play the D in the beginning of this measure like he does, (first finger second fret of the first string, second finger second fret of the third string, and third finger third fret of the second string, it makes an easier transition to the Bm7 with lifting only one finger! Otherwise if was driving me nuts! A little awkward fingering a D like he does at first, but it is well worth it! Kind of looks like a compressed version of the Dm chord.

The drawing and your words don’t match up.

Jamolay,
??? The drawing is for the Bm7 chord not the D. The D chord with the different fingering is at the very beginning of the measure. Fingering is not shown for the D but I described it. Sorry if it didn't make any sense. Here is James' fingering for the D chord.

D chord is the same exact notes (D, A, C#) but just different fingering.
Actually due to the capo on the second fret it's actually an E chord.

IMO easiest to incorporate a first finger three string barre in measure one and a first finger four string barre at start of measure two.

I can't locate it right now, but there's a good article by Jeffery Pepper Rogers that goes into some of the weird ways JT fingers his chords. A google search would probably find it

But it's tricky to go from the B base of the Bm7 to the open A string of the same barre. But maybe that's just me?

That's the same Bm that I use all the time (since I can't seem to master barre chords). I think it's actually a Bm6

I saw it described someone else as a Bm7-11. All I know is it works and sounds great.

That might be it . . . I know it's not a "straight" Bm . . . but I also know it's the easiest way for me to play a Bm.
