Pretty much true. I just put these Jazz 11-47 Flat-wounds on my new Gretsch 5422, yesterday. I got them on Amazon. Not cheap.
From what I can gleen from their site, the silk ends help with tone. I noticed that my flat-wound bass strings have the same wrap on them.
Even the ball ends have about 3/4 of silk wrap on the them too.
