This may not be the best forum to ask, as there isn't a lot of love for non traditional techniques around here.

That said, the key is to achieve full independence between both hands, and enough left hand strength so you can fret notes just with your LH and have them sound loud enough while your RH is doing something else. It's also vital that your LH rhythm be dead on and not sloppy.

For percussion stuff, practice polyrhythmic stuff without a guitar. Tap a table top in 3/4 with one hand and 4/4 with the other, accentuating the 1 on both sides. Use a metronome. Slowly. Then switch sides. Then switch key signatures. This will help with independence.

Most importantly, remember you're playing music. Not guitar, not fingerstyle, not percussive fingerstyle--you're playing music first and foremost.
