Kind of reminds me of Neil Young a little.
Watch him play Needle and the Damage Done live. He does a constant DUDU strumming but also hits individual notes. And its pretty clean sounding. Its like he does these big down up strums but only hits one note at a time.
That's not exactly what Ryan is doing, but it put me in the mindset of Neil Young's playing.
