Exactly. Gibson used to charge extra for natural finish archtop guitars, and that’s part of the reason. The other part that added the expense was that they used their most cosmetically attractive wood, their best figured maple and flawless spruce tops.

Normally Gibson covered up the wood with those dark and often opaque sunbursts, so it didn’t matter is there were any knots or odd grain anomalies because the pigmentation would cover it. But the wood had to look wonderful if it was going to be used on a natural finish instrument.
