Considering the unconventional aesthetics of Breedlove, I think it looks better sans pick guard.

That said, with your concern in mind, why not think about a clear guard, with a thought toward removing it on down the road when you've gained more control over your pick follow through?

I believe the clear guard would allow for more even UV aging of the top and you won't be left with the suntan shape of the opaque guard to deal with.
