Thanks a lot, it seems opinions are roughly equal here. Wonder how it'll play out on YouTube, at the moment the nylon is in the lead... :-)

It is interesting how and why some people think certain tunes sound better on one rather than on the other. There is more difference in timbre (??) that can be obtained with the nylon I think, but the steel string, as well as having a very different sound, generally has more sustain. But maybe that has more to do with the guitars themselves. I certainly prefer the sound of steel with older renaissance and Early Music.
I really appreciate all your comments, it helps to make the whole process worthwhile.

I might do another steel vs nylon on another tune coming up in the next few weeks. If I had more space to leave the microphones, USB interface etc set up, I'd probably do more, but i don't (have the space) and its just so time consuming, to put up, take down again, and then do the editing. I envy those of you who have setups installed in spare rooms.

Maybe one day...
