The Juber strings are more of a DADGAD set for a long-scale guitar - I've used them on my 25.4" Martin D-15S in standard tuning, and IME you're going to lose a lot of the characteristic archtop midrange cut and punch in the bargain; you shouldn't have any difficulties fingerpicking the standard 13-56 MM13 set on a short-scale guitar like your Loar (or my Godin - FYI my own index finger nail is particularly brittle so I "get it"), especially given the overall "slinkier" feel I mentioned earlier...
