Default Alternatives to the SM58 Microphone

I've seen a couple of posts recently wher people have said that the SM58 sounds a little muddy, and I got a similar comment from Saturday nights performance, where someone said I sounded slightly muffled.

I was playing through my Boss Acoustic Singer Pro, and bought the SM58 purely because it is the industry workhorse, I'd had experience with it before, and I got a decent price at the time.

What are the good alternatives out there?

Is the muddiness/muffled sound a standard issue for dynamic style mics, or are some better than others?

I've had my eye on the Shure Super 55 in black, mosly because it looks super cool(pun unintended!!)

But perhaps someone has comparitives that they can inform me further on?
Admittedly, I was always told to basically eat the microphone when singing, but I don't think that has been the cause of any muddiness of muffling.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
