I find the Fishman Platinum Pro to be a powerful and very useful preamp. I initially got it for guitar and have used it for that purpose at open mics in the past. Now that I'm using a Bose S1 as my PA a guitar preamp isn't necessary. I use the Platinum Pro for mandolin but have also used it as a DI for my bass when plugging directly into the house PA at church. It's right around the top of your price range but I suspect you might find a used one on Reverb or even here on the AGF.
