a unique and beautiful custom build from Dennis Kwasnycia, commissioned and built in 2011. At that time, Kwasnycia had acquired some rare
"Tunnel 13" Redwood.
This wood is from reclaimed Redwood beams that were used to support "Tunnel 13" of the Southern Pacific Railroad in Oregon. The tunnel (site of "The Last Great American Train Robbery") was constructed using Virgin Redwood timbers in the 1880s, wood that had spent over 120 years air-drying. From this batch of storied wood, Kwasnycia produced a
limited series of guitars with "Tunnel 13" Redwood tops. This guitar is number 2 of 13 guitars in that series.
For the back and sides Kwasnycia used a lovely set of African Blackwood which pairs beautifully both visually and sonically with the Tunnel 13 Redwood.
The African Blackwood has a striking bit of sapwood at the center and at it's apex is a "Luna Moth" inlay expertly crafted from a copious number of abalone pieces by Canadian luthier and inlay artist Mark Kett.
Mark Kett's inlay work has also appeared on guitars from Linda Manzer, David Wren, Sergei de Jonge, Marc Beneteau, Dana Bourgeois among others.
With permission from Kevin Ryan, Kwasnycia beautifully incorporated Ryan's "ghost inlay" design in the rosette and fingerboard inlays for this guitar.
This guitar's comfortable
C shaped 5 piece laminated neck is a joy to play.
There is shimmer to the top end, a warm and pleasing mid range, responsiveness to a light touch and good balance and projection.
I am the guitar's second owner having purchased it locally from the original owner a few years ago out of his large collection.
The guitar is in excellent condition, has been properly cared for and never gigged. The custom fit Hoffee case that protects it is also in excellent condition.
