The 40 Series is braced differently than the 03 Series. The 40s are balanced more toward the low end, but not a full shift toward Martin type bass.

I have played both, though it's been probably 15 years since I had my hands on a CW. The D40RW may be not have as much head room, but it will be similar in tonal balance to the Collings. I really like the D40RW. I have seen a couple dealers that ordered them with large sound holes. I'm not sure how many of those are around. Also, I have had no problem with the Larrivee 16" compound radiused fretboard.
