Paul Bigsby was making solid body electric guitars before Fender or Gibson and used the inline six headstock tuner pattern years before Leo Fender borrowed the design. Yes early Martin's also used that same design.
I am not sure why Bigsby put his neck on a Martin D28 and presented it to Travis but I agree the guitar is ugly. Especially the crazy pickguard.
