Echo chambers started as exactly that, per se. They were reflective rooms with a speaker and a mic, and what you got was a bunch of reflections. As engineers became more sophisticated they found ways to tame the early reflections and get some reverb out of their rooms via various techniques from speaker location and orientation to gobos to the columns in the Abbey Road chambers. The name hung on amongst some engineers and in some facilities.
